Making Your Argument Stand Out!

In order to receive a high score for your argumentative essay, students' essays must stand out from all the other essays that Reader/Graders read.  One way to stand out is to avoid cliches, typical evidence, and very popular quotes.  Remember, that the purpose for all of the essays is to show off a student's thinking skills.  To write well requires thinking.

So how can you stand out?

  • Avoid a formulaic response, i.e. the 5 paragraph essay that is nothing more than a list of three reasons that supports your opinion.
  • Use evidence that is not obvious; because this is the kind of evidence that almost all students in the nation will use.
  • Avoid typical quotes, such as: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" (President J.F.Kennedy).
No one can possible know what the argument prompt will be for the 2014 exam, but there are some general thematic categories that have been used over the years.  Below is a template for each student to start working on.  A hard copy will be given to you in class and later on you may modify this template in any manner as you see fit.

Your Assignment:

Choose one of the themes listed below in the chart and complete the following columns:
  1. Famous Person related to that theme (Think coaches, inventors, scientist, activist that aren't the typical person you would first think related to the theme.)
  2. Literary or Nonfiction text related to that theme
  3. Latin Phrase related to that theme.
  4. Quote that you will remember related to that theme (can be something your mom always told you--but avoid the Bible because most Bible verses unfortunately are cliche, such as: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".  But if you know a bible verse or biblical phrase that is not well known, then that would be good to use.
Try to avoid repeating what someone else has posted.  This means you need to read the postings before you begin looking for evidence.  Students will not receive credit if their response reflects something someone already posted and it seems more than obvious to your teacher.  So read the postings, then do some research, and THINK.  Then post your response.

Due Date:  Wednesday, January 22 by midnight.

Worth 80 Points

(Note: this is worth a lot of points because its value is worth your effort)

  1. Theme- Importance of Family
    1. Famous Person- The famous person I chose was Jase Robertson. In a recent interview, Jase from Duck Dynasty was questioned on the importance of family. "The reason I said fame and fortune is frivolous to me is because we were raised really poor, my brothers, we had one bed, one room. But nobody told us we were poor and I was just as happy," Jase Robertson said. Later in the interview Jase is discussing duck hunting and mentions "It's not so much about what we get to eat or how many ducks we shoot, it's about who we're with." (referring to his family). Overall he is a very family-oriented man.

    2. Literary or Nonfiction Text- When researching family and its importance, I came across an article that talked about how sharing/incorporating your familyʻs traditions with your own kids is vital in creating strong family values. It claimed that if your kids were taught values and traditions, they would have a better understanding of how important family is.

    3. Latin Phrase- A Latin phrase I can utilize is "in fraternitatis amore" which translates to "brotherly love".

    4. Quote Iʻll Remember- A quote I can easily remember for the importance of family originates from a TV Show I watch called "The Fosters". Itʻs about these two moms raising foster care kids as well as children they adopted or had from previous marriages. The quote is "DNA doesʻnt make a family, love does".

    1. Dear Marina,

You did a great job completing this assignment and thank you for starting everyone off with a great response to model.

I am not familiar with Jase Robertson, but I liked the fact that you identified why he is famous. I also really liked your Latin quote; it seems easy to remember.

      Great Job!

  2. Theme- Overcoming Adversity
1.Famous Person. A famous person who overcame adversity that I chose is the famous comedic actor Jim Carrey. He overcame his adversity of being homeless. He had to drop out of high school to help support his family they also ended up living in a van. In his interview with James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio Carrey told Lipton that when he quit school at fifteen he became a janitor. “I’d have a baseball bat on my janitor cart because I was so angry I just wanted to beat the heck out of something” was Jim Carrey before moving to another home in a new town. With a polished act Carrey started doing open-mike nights, regular paid shows, until discovered by comedian Rodney Dangerfield who signed him as his opening act on his tour. Carrey proved that you can overcome any adversity in your way.

2.Literacy Text/ or Nonfiction. While searching for famous people who have overcome adversity I came across a site about fifteen wildly successful people who overcame adversity. Another site told the true meaning of overcoming adversity. It was overcoming a hard time or circumstance and moving forward with your life in a positive way. Basically it’s saying you’ll go through tough times but it will get brighter as you move forward.

    3. Latin Phrase. “ In arduis fidelis” meaning faithful in adversity which is a very useful phrase that most people like me can use in life.

    4. Quote you’ll remember. A quote I can remember is “Let me embrace thee, sour adversity, for wise men say it is the wisest course” by William Shakespeare. From the website called brainyquotes. It’s really a great quote when it comes to adversity.

  3. Theme- Concerns of Society

    1. Bill Moyers is not your typical "Today Show" guest, nor does he appear on MTV or at the Global Globe awards, but what he does have is a weekly half-hour on PBS of ideas and voices designed to make sense of what’s happening to democracy. As Bill says, “throw light on what Americans can do to repair what’s broken.” His stories outline a variety a social issues, from climate change, and poverty in America, to money and politics, activism, and economic inequality. A website based off of his show also provides the topics in article form.
    2. One of my all time favorite books is called "The Bone People" by Keri Hulme. I read it about four years ago and was swept away by it's unique style- distinctively poetic, and unlike anything I had ever read before. It tackles intense concerns of society such as child abuse, alcoholism, family disassociation, depression, cancer, child welfare services, and the deterioration of culture. Published in New Zealand in the early 70's, it has proven to be a somewhat underground literature. I've never met someone who has read it, but have assumed my god mother has because she was the one who mailed me the old original edition print I've held onto all these years.
    3. Franco Un-American by NOFX is a song about some of the problems our country faces but does not want to deal with. A line from the chorus repeats "Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea." and visuals through out the music video depict gruesome cartoons, such as blood pouring out of Iraq and into gasoline tanks with Hummers pulling up on both sides of the image.
    4. Because "concerns of society" covers a very broad spectrum, I came up with a few different Latin phrases I felt were relevant.
Corruptisima re publica plurimae leges: In the most corrupt state are the most laws
Conscientia mille testes: Conscience is as good as a thousand witnesses
Facile omnes quom valemus recta consilia aegrotis damus: When we are healthy, we all have advice for those who are sick
Bonitas non est pessimis esse meliorem: It is not goodness to be better than the worst.
    5. This year I wrote a research based essay on economic inequality and its main factors. While delving into this topic I came across the quote "Experience demands that man is the only animal which devours its own kind, for I can apply no milder term to the prey of the rich on the poor." by Thomas Jefferson. I had never heard it before and was somewhat shocked by the intensity of the statement. This is one of the best qualities for a quote to have, along with accuracy and logic. The shock factor is what makes a quote memorable.

  4. A famous person that embodies over-coming adversity to me is Kendrick Lamar. He is a singer/songwriter who grew up in Compton among the most unfavorable of conditions. Despite growing up rejected the violent environment of his neighborhood, he committed himself to music and used it as a way to overcome the temptations of drugs and gang affilations.

The Lone Survivor is a book written by Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell who tells the story of his experiences after his team was ambushed and killed by Taliban soldiers in Afghan mountains. Luttrell’s book tells his incredible story of survival in enemy territory until retrieved by a team days later. To me this book is a prime example that things can always get worse and that there is always a way to get through the rough times.

A Latin Phrase relating to over-coming adversity is Per aspera ad astra, which translates “A rough road leads to the stars”.

A quote I remember was said by motivational speaker Eric Thomas, he says, “When you want to succeed, as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.” This quote sticks with me because it is a powerful statement that is easy to remember due to its simplicity.

  5. Theme- Importance of family

    1. The famous person I chose is Maria Bello. In an interview the interviewer asked what was something her mother told her that she always remembered and she said “My mother told me when I was a kid that each time we get to what feels like the edge of a cliff, we have two choices: to turn around and run, or to jump. I have learned over time to jump — and though it is scary, I know somewhere inside me that I will be caught." I love this quote and it inspires me to stop holding back.

    2. A song that always gets to me when I hear it is “Temporary Home” by Carrie Underwood. Throughout the song it’s about people overcoming challenges. The second verse is about a young mom who’s struggling and she’ll do anything for her baby girl. The third verse is about an old man dying in a hospital bed and he’s surrounded by family and people he loves. This just shows how much love a family has for each other, and how they’ll be there to help you through your worse times.

    3. A latin phrase related to this theme is “Familia mea, mea fortitudo”, which translates to “My family, my strength”.

    4. A quote I’ll always remember about family is, not to be cheesy, “ohana means family, family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” I’ve always loved Lilo and Stitch and I’ve just always remembered this quote since the first time I watched this movie back in 2002 when it came out.

  6. Theme: Overcoming Adversity

    1. Famous Person: The famous person I choose for this theme was Martin Luther King J.R. King was an american pastor, activist, humanitarian and leader of the African American Civil Rights Movement. King fought against racial inequality using nonviolent protest. And in 1964 King received a Nobel Peace Prize for these effective nonviolent protest against racism. Although his life was cut short, it was he who started the Civil Rights Movement which later brought overcoming of adversity for the African American People.

2.Literary Text or Nonfiction: One of the most classic books in American literature, “To Kill A Mockingbird” By Harper Lee, fits the theme of overcoming adversity. This book was published in 1960, right in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. Lee addresses all issues going on in the deep south at the time. One critic writes "In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its protagonist, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism." this alludes to a man who overcame adversity by fighting against racial injustice.

3.Latin Phrase: “Fiat Lux” which translates to “let light be made”. I chose this latin phrase because when someone overcomes adversity, metaphorically a light was made in their life, overcoming dark times..

4.Quote I'll remember: While looking up quotes about overcoming adversity, one that really stood out to me was “One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity” by Albert Schweitzer.

  7. The famous person I chose was Eminem and his way to bring moral values even though he subjects everything through a violent lyrical tone. He portrays a message through lyrics that may not be pleasant to the ears, but gets his message across to the listener to what he want to tell his fans, friends and family. About the rough life he lives through, what he has done, where he has been, and what really gets to him.

While looking for literary or nonfictional text I came across an article that describes that everyone should live a life that contains a unity, harmony, and the honor between one another.

A “acts non verba” which means “actions, not words” can be use in life for people like me.

A quote that I will remember is “who are you to judge the life that I live? I know I’m not perfect, and i don’t live to be.” Bob Marley. This has great moral value behind to such a man with such peace and serenity.

  8. The importance of family

Famous person- The famous person i chose was Michael Oher. His story was told through the movie “The Blind Side”. He grew up with a mother that couldn’t even take care of herself let alone her twelve kids. Then he was passed from foster family to foster family until he met the Tougy’s and that became his permanent home. The Tougy’s changed his life. They gave him opportunities he wouldn’t have had otherwise. He went to college and played college ball, played in the NFL. These things he probably wouldn’t have had the chance if not for his new family. His story shows that family doesn’t have to be the people who share the same blood, just people that share the same love for you. People that want to see you succeed in whatever you do.

Song- A song that shows the importance of family is Hailies song by Eminem. Eminem is a rapper that most parents frown upon when their kids are listening to him. But subtract all the swearing Eminem shows a lot about the importance of family. In Hailies song he’s singing about getting her back and his love for her. He’s telling the world that it was through Hailie that he made it through his hardships.

Latin Phrase-A latin phrase about the importance of family is “familia supra omnia” which translates to family over everything. I chose this phrase because this is how i see my family. But i extend it to more than my blood family. For me i think of my close friends as family because they’re always there for me. I put my family over everything because family is everything.

Quote-There are many family quotes that inspire me and i wish i can remember them all. But one i came across that i will remember is “without a family, man, alone in the world, trembles in the cold” by Andre Maurois. I like this quote because it really lightens the importance of a family. It doesn’t have to be the family you are related to, friends considered as family is enough. But a person without some type of family is a lonely person, whether they know it or not.

  9. Theme: Importance of Family

1.Famous Person – It's hard to think of people, other than those related to you, when you think of the word 'family'. Finally, it hit me. When thinking of a famous person related to the theme of family, I thought of Sandra Bullock, mostly based upon the movie she acted in, The Blind Side. In this movie, she shows the importance of family by taking in a poor teenage man, Michael Oher, into her home. Although she didn't show it, she began to love the boy more as each day passed, and cared for him as if he were a child of her own. Sandra put the racial differences aside, supported, and even called Michael her own son in the movie.

2.Literary Text – When searching up literary texts about the importance of family, you get thousands of results on making a stronger family relationship, or quotes about how family creates a huge impact on life. Then came across my mind, The Last Song. Aside from its love story, the book also implies that you shouldn't take your family, or loved ones, for granted.

3.Latin Phrase - Fortitudo mea e(x) proximis meis venit, meaning “my family gives me strength.”

4.Quote – It's hard to choose just one quote about family, because all quotes you can find about them are inspiring. However, I think that out of many, “Families are the compass that guide us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.” by Brad Henry was a good one because he says that family is always there to support us; they help us when we need it, they're our boost to achieve our goals, and they're also our bandages for every time we fall.

    1. Famous soccer player Pele from Brazil lived in a town with only a little money. He developed his skill of soccer by kicking around a sock stuffed with rags around the streets. He was 15 when recruited to play on the Brazilian national team.
    2. Nonfiction: When life Gets Hard written by Meg Johnson, is perfect for Overcoming adversity. Literary Text/Nonfiction: “The Real Me” by Natalie Grant is an autobiography about the singer’s battle with an eating disorder brought on by a distorted self image. I chose Reichel because when he composes a song or dance for his hula students in the hawaiian language, he does it with a fresher look so that all these long heard stereotypes of Hawaii are gone.

Non-Fiction Text: For the non fiction text I researched about the annexation of Hawaii and came across a document called “ The 1897 Petition Against The Annexation of Hawaii”. This relates to valuing culture because in the document it tells of how many Native and native-mixed Hawaiians petitioned against the annexation to keep to their culture.

Latin Phrase: “Cultura Animi”. This means cultivation of the soul. Not referring to agriculture, this latin phrase refers to humans “overcoming their barbaric ways, and through artifice, become fully human”.

Quote: A quote i’ll remember related to this theme is “ Ua Mau Kea O’ Ka Aina I’ka Pono “. This quote translates The Life of The Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness. Hawaiian culture is mainly centered on the land. The land gave them life and they would treat it with the respect it deserves.

Bill Cosby became one of the most popular dads in television and served as a parental figure to his young co- stars.

Literary text: when searching a literary text about the importance of family I found an article that talked about creating, refining and retelling a story of positive moments of family, if you want a happier family. It may increase the odds that your family will thrive for many generations to come.

  14. Theme- Role of Government

Famous Person: I chose George Clooney as my famous person. He has done humanitarian work in many impoverished countries where the government can’t take care of it’s citizens. Clooney’s efforts embody what the government should be doing for it’s people. He is a proponent of The Affordable Care Act and many other programs designed to help the poorer citizens of our country.

Literary or Nonfiction Text: When I was younger, I read a book called “The People's History of the United States” which contained many good quotes on the role of government. One of them being “The memory of oppressed people is one thing that cannot be taken away, and for such people, with such memories, revolt is always an inch below the surface.” This text reflects on governments who have failed to serve the people and because of that, crumbled.

Latin Phrase: My Latin phrase is “Salus populi suprema lex esto” which means that the welfare of the people shall be the supreme law. This means that the government should be taking care of it’s people before anything else.

Quote That I Remember: The quote that I remember is by Benjamin Franklin. He says “Laws too gentle are seldom obeyed; too severe, seldom executed.” This quote means that the proper role of government is a small niche that must be found for a government to be successful.

Famous Person: The Famous person I chose was Miley Cyrus. Growing up her whole life in the spotlight. Beginning with her famous father, to being Hannah Montana from the ages of 13-18, now to being a huge music sensation. She has never had a break. Especially recently, with her changing appearance, to her risque music videos that have millions of views, her spotlight has never been bigger. With all this added attention her personal life is no longer a secret with paparazzi around every corner, in which “alone time” is only a fantasy for her.

Literary text/ Nonfiction: When I was researching simply “The Impact of Media” I came across a very interesting trend that I never expected to be an effect/ impact of media. Believe it or not Ballerinas can be most affected by media. The need to be “the best” often makes or breaks them. They are all trying to be the skinniest, most flexible, prettiest, or overall best. Which causes countless of ballerinas to be either bulimic or anorexic, all because they don’t believe they are good enough.

Latin Phrase: in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni which means “We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire” Which is true about media, once you’re in the spotlight, you are almost as if consumed by fire.

Famous person: Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem is a rapper who had just about nothing growing up. His father left as a baby and him and his mother had to move around a lot and were financially unstable. He moved from public housing project to public housing project and never and close friends. He was always the outcast at school and was bullied. After failing 9th grade three times, he dropped out at 17. Although he never did well in school, Eminem was always great at writing— and he found a way to express himself and take out his anger through rapping. While working odd minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet he practiced and performed underground rap battles which eventually led him to become one of the most respected figures in the Detroit underground Rap Scene. After having a daughter, Eminem released his first independent rap album and was soon discovered by Dr. Dre who gave him a record label on the spot. After two years of working with Dr. Dre, Eminem became an instant success when releasing The Real Slim Shady. Eminem overcame poverty and showed that hard work and persistence pays off. A man who was once an outcast is now loved by millions of people all over the world.

Literary: “The Host” by Stephanie Myers is a book about two girls, or one girl and an alien parasite in the girl’s body. The human race is fighting off the alien parasites who are taking over all of their bodies, and one human, Melony, is still able to comminucate with the parasite that has taken over her body. How it sits on the subject of overcoming adversity: Melony is able to convince Wanderer, the parasite, to help save the human race and find her hidden family that’s rebelling while Wanderer in Melony’s host body is treated as a prisoner of Melony’s family, when she’s just there to help. Eventually the two girls help save the human race, and Wanderer is given a new host body of a girl who died and Melony gets her old body back, and the two also get to be with their loved ones after separation for so long.

Latin phrase: “sedit qui timuit ne non succederet”. This quote translates to “he who feared he would not sat still”

Quote you’ll remember: There are a couple of quotes that come to mind when I think of overcoming adversity and I couldn’t decide which I liked more so here’s both.
I actually came across this quote on Instagram, so I don’t know who the author is but it’s quite easy to remember. “God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers.” This means no matter how tough your situation, you’re strong enough to get through it. My second quote is by Winston Churchill, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” This quote is more motivational to me, because it means if you’re having a rough time, “going through hell”, just keep going. After thinking about it for a while, it made even more sense to me that if you’re going through hell you actually want to make a change. Hell is probably not a very good place to get comfortable in, so might as well keep going. The strive can mean Heavens on the other side.

Camille Corot was a famous French landscaping painter of h 19th centry. As a leading painter of the Barbizon School of the Arts he left a significant impact on the culture of oil painting. In his paintings he portrayed vast scenery of Nature from all around France and Italy.

My favorite literary text related to nature is a poem written by Angela Morgan. In her poem, she questions God on why he made things the way that they are? And why there are so many beautiful details in the tiniest of things? A passage of her poem goes:
“Why did you mate the moonlit night
    With the honeysuckle vines?
How did you know Madeira bloom
    Distilled ecstatic wines?
How did you weave the velvet disk
    Where tangled perfumes are?
God, when you thought of a pine tree
How did you think of a star?”
This poem really stuck with me because of the images that i saw when reading it. And u believe that it portrays nature in a really beautiful way.

A Latin phrase I came across was “natura nihil frustra facit.” Meaning: Nature does nothing in vain. I chose this phrase because of the depth of the meaning. Nature supplies all things with every recourse there is and us a consumers, always pushes nature to its limits by mass production and now GMO, but it never stops providing.

A quote that is relate able to nature that I like to refer back to is: The trees that are slow to grow, bear the best fruit. Thinking of this keeps me in a positive mindset because it’s true that when you take time on things, the result is always better than rushing the process.

  21. Theme: Nature

Famous Person: Robert Redford has spent over thirty years on the board of Natural Resources Defense Council, and advocating for the protection of Utah's natural resources.

Literary Text: The children's book The Lorax by Dr Seuss. This book depicts the importance of the environment and what happens when you don't take care of it. I like that this book has such an important message in a children's book.

Latin Phrase: A Latin phrase that has to do with nature is "naturam expellas furca, tamen usque recurret." Translated it means, You may drive out Nature with a pitchfork, yet she still will hurry back. This phrase is stating you must take the basic nature of something into account.

Quote: "Nature has music for those who listen." is a quote from a writer named George Santayana. This quote speaks for the beauty of nature and points out the fact we should listen to it.

  22. Theme- Moral Values
    1. Famous Person- The famous person I chose is Colonel Colin Powell because he has a great sense of morals like leadership and hard work. Colonel Powell helps people achieve more through life by teaching them that you can only be successful if you work hard, learn forward, and keep moving forward. Powell has been in situations where he had to learn from his mistakes in the army and through those mistakes he has escalated rank after rank. Being a Colonel isn’t an easy job either but with his hard work he was able to lead his troops.

    2. Literary Text or Nonfiction-In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” Atticus teaches his children very important values. He instills in his children to do the right thing, even though no one else will. As for himself, he believed that everyone should be treated fairly and equally.

    3. Latin Phrase- A latin phrase I found was “mos malorum” meaning way of the elders. This phrase to me means that we must do as our ancestors have done and to continue their legacy.

    4. Quote I’ll remember- “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from your failures.” Colin Powell

  23. Nature

Famous Person: Jane Goodall. This is the woman best known for studying chimpanzees for forty-five years and founded the Jane Goodall Institute. She is such and inspiration because she devoted her life to learning the ways of family behaviour in chimpanzees. If you were to ask this woman anything about nature you can be sure that she knows exactly what she’s talking about.

Literary Text: Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote an essay titled Nature that shows a different view on the appreciation of nature. It’s not a normal, “Nature is beautiful,” type of essay. It’s more of a, “The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood.” That means that the only way a man could truly appreciate nature is if he keeps his childish heart, but his grown-up mind. This whole essay goes very in depth of transcendentalism that eventually you start to agree with every single word that’s written.

Latin proverb: "Omnis ars naturae imitatio est." This means “All art is but an imitation of nature.”

  24. Theme: Political Justice

Famous Person – The famous person that I feel relates to this theme perfectly is none other than Abraham Lincoln himself. Lincoln spent the majority, if not all, of his time in office fighting adamantly for equality and “political justice”, despite having little support from half the nation.

Literary or non-fiction text related to the theme – As far as literary text related to this theme, there is actually a book called Political Justice written by William Godwin during the time of the French Revolution. In his book, Godwin doesn’t talk about specific political injustices, but rather the general underlying problems of it all.

Latin Phrase – A Latin phrase that ties to the theme of political justice is “Auctoritas non veritas facit legem”. Translated this means “Authority, not truth, makes law”. This relates to the theme because the reason for most injustice is because of the authoritative figures that we have. They do not care about what is right or the truth but since they have authority we must obey their laws.

Memorable Quote – One quote that really stood out to me was, “if you are neutral in situations of injustice, then you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” By Desmond Tutu. This relates to political justice because, the fact that so many people just sit back not caring about what’s going on, only allows the discrimination to continue and even flourish.

  25. Oppression

Famous person: Martin Luther King Jr. was recognized for his dedication and freeing African Americans from oppression. But what appealed to me as an individual was that he also opened up opportunities for people of all ethnicity to be welcomed and accepted. He lead a non-violent protest that effectively reached the nation's heart and spirit. Martin Luther King Junior that diversity strengthens our nation and further humanity's advancement.

Literary Text: Martin Luther is known for his famous speeches titled , " I have a dream" a phrase that stuck out to me was when said " darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can. hate will not drive out hate; only love will do that. " This was an effective way of showing that there was no way a nation can unite if it was fueled by hate and racial differences. That acceptance needed to be in people's heart in order for things to get better.

Latin Proverb : " dat deus incrementum" meaning " god gives growth"

  26. Theme: Overcoming Adversity

Famous Person- To me, Kendrick Lamar is overcoming adversity personified. He is a Grammy-nominated hip hop artist from Compton, California. Compton is not the easiest place to grow up, and isn't kind to a kid who prefers school over drugs. Kendrick also struggled to gain traction in his rap career while under his former pseudonym "K-Dot". After years of grinding to reach the plateau of the hip hop scene, Kendrick was finally rewarded with a platinum album (Good Kid, m.A.A.d city) and the culminating/aforementioned Grammy nominations.

Literary Text: In "Moneyball", Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane tries to find a way to build a winning team with the lowest budget in the MLB. Despite his disadvantages, Beane uses his wits to revolutionize statistical analysis and player development. With his back against the wall, Beane fights back against the grain and becomes a revolutionary figure.

Latin Phrase: I like the latin phrase "Per Angusta Ad Augusta", which translates to "through difficulties to honors". This means that despite any difficulties one might encounter, great things are possible.

  28. On the Role of Government.

A government’s role is to ensure Order above all else, and to dispense justice on those who would prevent the nation’s progress, and finally to change and evolve into something greater. A citizens role is to serve the established Order, and to change it for the better when necessary, a citizen exists serve the whole of the society, rather than the individual. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few; If a leg goes lame, it must be removed, if a kidney fails it must be cut out, the body does not live for the individual organ, and neither does a nation.

A famous person of the past associated with this belief would be Plato, famous greek philosopher, and author of The Republic. One of Plato’s most famous quotes read as such:
“The heaviest penalty for declining to rule is to be ruled by someone inferior to yourself.”
It has a simple meaning, and a far reaching vision. If you are strong enough, you do not decline the right to power, for you are simply inviting more flawed individuals the right to hold themselves above you and all others in your nation. It also means that a citizen should not be apathetic towards who is in power, and if he or she sees a flaw in a system, and they possess the strength of character to change it, then they must for the betterment of the government, and the nation as a whole. The meaning of this philosophy can even be extended to present times, where the average citizen says “I don’t get involved in politics”, as if that somehow makes them cleaner or better than everyone else! If a citizen does not like the current Government, then they have a duty to change it for the better, not complain or wallow in apathy. Plato understood this thousands of years before our time, and that is why I chose him for this theme.

A nonfiction literary example of the true Role of Government is in H.G Wells book, “The New World Order”, where he defines the Government as the ruling body of society, and where the future of humanity is located. Wells believed that in a century all governments on the world would unite in some way, and pave a way for a World Government, that could see to the needs of the entire world and the future of all mankind while both preserving Order, and Justice on the criminals and anarchists. It is a fascinating piece of work, although Wells tended to come off as rather pacifistic in his views, but the main point of his still stands.

A famous quote that can be attributed to the role of Government is one from none-other than Julius Caesar himself, one of the last leaders of the Roman Republic before its eventual evolution into the Roman Empire underneath his grandnephew, Emperor Augustus Germanicus Caesar. Julius Ceasar was quoted as saying,
    “Veni, Vidi, Vici.”
    “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
You’re probably wondering how this relates to government, but one must remember that this quote was given upon Caesar’s report to the Roman Senate, when describing his victory against a rebellion against the Republic, he annexed the rebelling state rather than letting it free after the rebellion. Caesar told the Senate this because they expected a parlay and diplomacy, rather than a new country under their rule, he did not intend it as a boast, but rather to tell the Senate that a nation must expand for it to evolve into something greater.

    A final quote, just in case the others weren’t enough to cement the point that a Government’s role is to change and evolve into something more effective;
"In the next century, nations as we know it will be obsolete; all states will recognize a single, global authority. National sovereignty wasn't such a great idea after all."
    - Strobe Talbot, President Clinton's Deputy Secretary of State, Time Magazine, July 20th, l992

    Theme: Overcoming Adversity

Famous Person: Martin Luther King Jr. known best for his leadership of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He faced racism which was the biggest issue during the 40’s. Everything he worked for was done in a non-violent manner. Although faced with violence from opposing sides he still stood be the value he believed was right.

Literary or Nonfiction Text: The Bible represents the overcome on adversity throughout but one of the quotes I thought of comes from Proverb 18:24, this talks about how even though difficulties a true friend always stands by.

Latin Phrase: The latin phrase I found is ”tenacitas per aspera” This translated means Strength in Adversity. This means really what is say with adversity comes the strength to move on.

    Over-coming Adversity

The famous person I chose was Bill Gates. Bill Gates first business failed. Yet the richest person in the world had once met failure. As Bill Gates says, “success is a lousy teacher, it seduces smart people into thinking they can never lose”. This leans into meaning that success is captured from failure. According to Bill Gates, In order to succeed one must first fail.

Literary or Nonfiction Text- When researching nonfiction text from Bill Gates I found a very true and applicable saying. “Its fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure. This explains how to overcome adversity, in ways all successful people go through.

Latin Phrase- A Latin phrase I found was"Numquam cede usque ad finem”. This means to never give up until the end. This shows how to overcome adversity.

A quote I’ll remember- “Life is not fair, Get use to it”- Bill Gates. This quote is something that I will remember because whenever I would start to feel sorry for myself i just remember life isn’t fair, and I’m not the only one trying to “overcome adversities”

  31. This posting is from Amada because she also had problems with her mac. Please note it is a different theme that was not noted above.

    Theme- Self-Esteem

1.Famous Person- The person I chose was, Edward Elstin Cumming, also known as E. E. Cummings. E. E. Cummings was an American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. He died in the early 1960’s. Why I chose him is because in all of his work he worked on self-esteem. In fact a lot of his poetry was on self-confidence. On one of his paintings he said, “We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep something inside us is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch…” Personally, this shows me self-esteem/ self-confidence in every single way.

2.Literary or Nonfiction Text- When looking at Self-Esteem articles, I found an essay called, “The Truth About Self-Esteem,” by Alfie Kohn. She goes on to saying how this topic is very controversial and there are two types of people for this topic: “the pro-self-esteemers, mostly educators, who can scarcely believe that anyone would question the importance of trying to improve children's perceptions of their own worth; and the critics, who dismiss such efforts as ineffective and nonsensical distractions from academics.”

3.Latin Phrase- Well, the word 'esteem' comes from a Latin word that means 'to estimate'. So, self-esteem is how you estimate, or regard, yourself. But the phrase I chose was, “Et ibi in medio vestri 'credere possis.” It means, “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

4.Quote I’ll remember- A quote that I think everyone should remember is, “Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit” It’s a famous quote by E. E. Cummings himself. This quotes just shows us how we only need ourselves to believe in us, and we could do wonders.

  32. Theme: Over-coming Adversity

Famous Person: The famous person that I chose is Eminem. He was living with his girlfriend and their daughter in his mom's mobile home which kept getting broken into and had a minimum wage job at a little restaurant named Gilberts at which he got fired from multiple times. His abuse of drugs and alcohol led to a failed suicide attempt. But he stuck to rap and eventually became a three time grammy award winning rap artist and some even say he is one of the best artists ever.

Literary or Nonfiction Text: I actually happened to find a biography on Eminem. It talks about his whole life. His childhood in Detroit, getting into rapping as a teen, being on the brink of poverty in his late teens to early 20's, all the way up to his success as a music artist. It shows that if you really put your heart and mind to it, you can accomplish so much more than you think.

Latin Phrase: "ad astra per aspera" This translates into "a rough road leads to the stars" This means that, through hardship brings out strengths that will lead to success.

Quote I'll Remember: “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.” by Maya Angelou. This quote means that no matter what is going on outside, there is always be something on the inside that will make able for you to prosper

  34. Overcoming Adversity

Jackie Robinson was well known for his skill in baseball. The movie “42” tells the story of how Robinson was treated when he entered into the league that was exclusively for white males. Even though he was ridiculed and mocked, both on and off the field, he never gave up. Jackie Robinson is one of the greatest baseball players I have ever known. Not only because of his hard work as a player, but also as a determined person, who stood firm in his belief and never succumbed to the hateful words of others.

When I think of overcoming adversity, The Hunger Games comes to mind. Yes, maybe the only thing people focus on is Katniss and Peeta, but there are great stories of success throughout the series. For example, one trial that the main characters must face always is the threat of the corrupt government that attempts to control all who are within the districts. The story may not be very realistic, but it shows that determination overcomes trial.

Alis grave nil translates to “Nothing is heavy to those who have wings.” This is one of my favorites because the wings represent the courage we have as people. Adversity can bring us to our lowest points, but it is our courage and perseverance that gives us wings to rise above our difficulties.

William Shakespeare said “The robbed that smiles, steals something from the thief.” Powerful words. It really embodies what overcoming adversity is about. Believing in yourself even when it seems that all odds are against you.

  35. Theme-Overcoming adversity

When I think about people who have overcome adversity I often think about athletes that have risen out of their unfavorable conditions and made something of themselves. I chose Jesse Owens. He is an African-American track and field athlete who performed in the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. He was born into a poor family of 10 children. He discovered his passion for running and overcame racial, and financial problems to compete in the Olympics. He won 4 gold medals. This is a perfect example of overcoming adversity and rising above your problems.

A literary example of overcoming adversity is the book “Hatchet” By Gary Paulsen. It tells the story of a 15 year old boy, who’s plane crashes in the middle of the Canadian woods. He is forced to use the little resources he has and learn to survive by himself. He lives out there for months until he is finally rescued. He kept living even though it was really hard and frightening and eventually he was found.

My latin phrase is “dum vita est spes est”. It translates to “while there is life, there is hope”. This is saying that even though you may have problems and you might have a lot of troubles, you still have life and that means that you have hope. Hope to overcome everything and have a good life.

A quote is “No pressure, No Diamonds” By Mary case. This is saying that amazing things come out of adversity or in otherwise diamonds come out of a lot of pressure.

Literary Text or Nonfiction: In Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” he challenges England’s steadfast belief that government and total control is essential, he introduces the need for a redefined set of moral.

Latin Phrase: Non est vivere sed valere vita est: Life is not being alive but being well (life is more than just being alive). We are more than a simple existence we are set out with a need to pursue principle, and understand the indefinite existence of being.

  40. Concerns of Society
Latin quote: sedit qui timuit ne non succederet.
“He who feared he would not succeed sat still.” I love this phrase because its helped me realize that we have to push and believe we can do anything if we want change; if we say we can’t do something, we can’t.
Famous person: This person isn't “famous” but is still very important to me. While working at the NTBG gardens, I worked with plenty of equally amazing people. Mahealani Yamashita, My mentor, became someone I looked up too and was not only my motivator, but a close friend. Everyday she had some incredible story to inspire me with. She reminded what is was to be “pono” and to have morals that were true, to myself, and to strive for the equality of all; to live harmonious with nature and society, and to it’s proper potential.
    Non-fiction Text:
Quite possibly, my favorite series of all time, is the “Outlander” series. It’s all about a Englishwoman named Claire Beauchamp Randall in 1946, whom is an ex-combat war nurse from WWII that travels to the Scottish Highlands with her husband, Frank for their reunion after 7 years apart. She then comes across a circle of standing stones which ends up traveling her back in time to 1743, where she meets Jack Randall who looks just like her husband Frank—and proves to be Frank’s six-times-great-grandfather. Of course, he is nothing like her husband and in fact tries to capture her. Claire runs away from him and ends up in the hands of a gang of highland Scots who are also trying to avoid getting caught by the vile man who is chasing her. To avoid being handed over to Captain Randall, Claire is obliged to marry the young clansmen Jamie Fraser.
Diana Gabaldon continues their journey of falling in love and surviving the politics of war of the 18th century throughout all 8 books. This series reminds about the differentiating politics of different regions. It talks about the way people lived or as I should describe it, “survived” in that era. The whole series constantly reflects on the differences between the cultures from the 20th century to the 18th century. Let alone the changes throughout one century as it is.
Song: A song that reminds me of our concerns of society would be “imagine” by John Lennon. It was written in a time of war and discrimination. The whole song is about changing our perspective and striving for something bigger and better than all of us. To love what is and accept what we must do for our society’s greater, unified good.
Quote: “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi. 41. Nature
1.Famous Person: When I saw this topic, I researched Clinton Richard Dawkins, a ethologist, evolutionary biologist and author. Dawkins isn't as famous as he should be, considering he discovered the gene-centered view of evolution. He wrote a book called The Extended Phenotype that the phenotypic effects of genes can affect other organisms as well as the original being.

2.Literary/Nonfiction Text: I'd like to again reference Richard Dawkins in this category. Another one of his books, The Magic of Reality, tells how the real magic of reality is science. Ancient cultures used to describe occurrences in nature as acts of many gods who were all-powerful beings who made everything happen as it does. Dawkins proves with ridiculously accurate facts how everything is based on science, and that everything happens with reason and scientific process.

    3. Latin Phrase: "Natura non facit saltum ita nec lex."
This phrase exactly translates to "nature does not make a leap, thus neither does the law. This further simplifies to mean that nature and the legal system both move gradually and without haste. This is a very good phrase relating to nature and its processes being slow and steady with no priorities.

  42. Theme: Importance of family

    1. Famous Person- A Famous celebrity that I feel embodies the theme importance of family is Katherine Heigl. Katherine Heigl is an unmarried, single mother of a two year old Korean daughter. Heigl shows that the definition of family doesn’t need to consist of a father, a mother, and a child, but can be successful as just a mother and a daughter. The age old thought that a family has to consist of a father, mother, and child has been rethought and now can consist of two fathers, two mothers, or even just a father or mother. A family doesn’t have to be “complete” to be a family, and Katherine Heigl directly demonstrates that. She shows that if you want a family enough, you can make it happen. If Family is important to you then you can make a family for yourself.

    2. Literary or Nonfiction Text- A text from literature that I found pertaining to the importance of family is from a book titled “Tuesdays With Morrie”, by Micth Albom. The quote says “This is part of what a family is about, not just love. It’s knowing that your family will be there watching out for you. Nothing else will give you that. Not money. Not fame. Not work.” This shows the importance of family because it describes how you could have all the fame and fortune, but fame, fortune, or anything in the world couldn’t come close to the values and happiness that only a family can bring.

    3. Latin Phrase- A Latin phrase that shows the importance of family is “Ante meum extraneus veniat, nihil”, which means “Before my family comes nothing”. This basically says that family is most important and family over everything.

    4. Quote I’ll Remember- The quote ill remember that addresses the importance of family is “In every conceivable manner, the family is the link to our past, and bridge to our future”, by Alex Haley. This quote means to me that you can’t achieve much without your family, and that your family is a key ingredient to success.
