A Brief Guide to Writing Definition
Essays by Cheryll A. Barker, Writing
Tutor
The
definition essay defines something, perhaps a particular word or idea. It is
often a combination of the cause and effect, the descriptive, the narrative,
the process, and the comparison / contrast essays, all working together to
create a complete definition of a multifaceted subject.
Let’s say you
are taking a test, and on the test you are asked to define the word
"feminism." A dictionary, for example, defines the word feminism as
“the theory of political, economical, and social equality of the sexes.” There
is nothing wrong with this definition, but it does not give the reader a
complete understanding of the word because it does not include the connotation
of the word--the added meaning that society gives a word over time. Many
people, for instance, think of feminists as outspoken and assertive, yet this
is not part of the dictionary definition.
To write a
successful definition essay you must share all the knowledge you have obtained
on the subject. In order for the reader to have an absolute understanding of
the word "feminism," you may want to start with the history. From
that point you could tell about the men and women who saw the need for
equality, and finally how feminism affects us today.
Features
Definition essays can focus on words or phrases
which are:
Obscure, unknown--the definition given is usually formalDo Not Do This TypeNecessary to a field of study-usually formal definitions are givenDo Not Do This Type- Misunderstood--these
essays often focus on the value of a correct understanding or the history
of how the word became misunderstood
- Abstract--Often-informal
definitions will be given of abstract words like love or beauty
with the purpose of making these abstractions more accessible or concrete.
Often these definitions are highly personal.
- Commonplace--sometimes
definition essays will focus on commonplace words for the purpose of
leading readers to a new appreciation of the word or to revitalize the
word.
Selecting a Subject
1. When selecting a subject, remember
that most words or ideas have many different meanings. Do not hesitate to
explore and use those meanings. A word as simple as "dark" can refer
to what happens to the sky when the sun goes down, a shade of a color, the
presence of evil, or a person’s mysterious side.
2. After choosing the subject you want
to define, and carefully considering all of its meanings, organize all of your
thoughts in the order that would best convey the message you want to get across
to the reader. An outline works best for this step.
3. Decide what style of essay you want
to use. If you are breaking your definition into parts, the process method may
be your best choice. If you are defining by comparing your subject to another,
comparison and contrast may be your approach. You will find the longer your
definition is, the greater the chances are of using several of the techniques
of writing an essay.
4. Avoid
defining a word by quoting the dictionary. Example: Webster’s dictionary says . . .
5. Avoid defining with "is when"
and "is where." These adverb-phrase introducers only describe words,
rather than define them.

Use Net Etiquette when responding to your peers, i.e., "Dear Kanoe" and "Sincerely Michael."
Do not adhere to MLA format for your essay, meaning heading, spacing, font, and such; otherwise, your essay will take up too much room on the blog site. But give your essay a title.
Include your name and the name of your Academy at the end of the essay.
Most importantly: Have Fun! Writing should be fun and not painful. So find something that makes you want to share it with others. Once you care about your topic/subject, the rest of the essay becomes easy.
****Response to Your Peers
Discuss the organizational structure they used for their essay. For example, do they begin with a narrative, then discuss the cause and effects of what they are defining, and follow it with a discussion on what "it" is not with an ending that gives several details on what "it" is?
Cite details from your peer's essay that support your discussion.
Beauty
ReplyDelete“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. This is a common phrase used to describe the reason some people think certain things are beautiful, and others do not. Only that one person can decide for themselves what they think. If a person feels something in their heart, that something is beautiful to them, it does not matter whether others do as well. However, society today has strayed from this phrase. Society decides what is beautiful sometimes and that is not right.
Beauty can be something that looks nice to that person. It can be a flower, a sunset, a person...anything. Things that we think are pretty, we want to take a picture of and never stop looking at them. Beautiful things make us feel something inside that we never want to stop feeling. That is all beauty is defined by, just a feeling inside. Society makes us think that you have to look a certain way to look beautiful, and if you don’t look that way then you aren’t beautiful. That is not true beauty, however. Beauty does not have one certain look; it is many, many different looks. We all think different people are good looking, and don’t like all the same people. Someone that is attractive to one person may not be attractive to another, it just depends on the person. That is beauty. If we all liked the same thing, everybody would look exactly the same, and that would be bland. Beauty should not be defined as how society wants it to be, beauty should be defined by the individual themselves.
Society mainly focuses on the physical beauty of one, not the internal beauty. “Beauty” should not be about what people look like, it should be about what they are. The kind of person you are inside is the beauty that society should pay attention to. A beautiful personality is far superior to a beautiful-looking person. Think of a book, the outside cover is just to hold the book together, and the inside is what truly matters. Sure, a beautiful cover can catch your eye more likely, and may prompt you to read it, but if the story in the book is not a good story, then you will not like it. On the other hand, if the cover is not a pretty cover but you read the story and really like it, the cover is no longer important. The cover can be as fancy as it wants, but in the end, will not make a difference on whether you liked the book, only the story inside will matter. The inside what truly counts.
Beauty is only about what you think. The opinions of others do not matter, even society’s opinion. Society’s opinion is wrong. Society focuses on one thing when it comes to beauty, and should be focusing on a lot more. The characteristics and morals that you have are what makes you up, not the makeup you’re wearing. That is what beauty is.

Drive and Persistence
ReplyDeleteHave you ever just wanted to quit. Just completely stop, drop it all and walk away. It was your drive and persistence that stopped you. Having drive isn’t run away from your problems. It isn’t giving up when things get hard. It’s fighting through the pain to finish what you’ve started.
We wouldn’t be here today if the pilgrims had given up in the winters and went back to Europe. Life isn’t handed to you on a silver platter you need to work hard and not give up to get to where you want to go. Life is hard, sometimes it doesn’t want you to win but thats when drive keeps you there and persistence pushes you through it. A couple years ago I was playing a soccer game and my team was losing 11 to 0 everyone on my team had already given up and they were telling me to also. But the stubborn person I am, I didn’t give up and I played the rest of the game in the defence by myself determined not to let them score again. The end score was 11-0
Today’s society is mislead the youth of the nation showing them that is “ok” to give up when things get hard, but it’s not. I see less and less kid playing sports nowadays in comparison to when I was a young kid. Being as kid try the sport and if they find it too hard for then they won’t play anymore but thats not right. I know at a young age kids don’t have the discipline to have drive or persistence, at this age though it fall upon the parents or guardians to instill this into the child otherwise giving up in hard times will become the first reaction.
Although in life majority of the time when people give up it’s wrong. With this being said, there are also time when people need to know when to give up, one attribute I do not possess. In my life I’ve been fighting for something for around 10 years, some of my closest friend have told me to give up but it’s my drive that keeps me coming back and my stubborn persistence that won’t let me give up.
I treat all aspects of my life like this because this is how you grow. Drive is an urge or something that compels you and, persistence is continual existence or occurrence. Life is hard, it will push you down. But it’s up to you on how you react. Will you let it shove you down or will you fight till the end?

Dear Noah,
DeleteThe way you started out your essay asking rhetorical questions really drew the reader in, for example in the first sentence "Have you ever just wanted to quit.". This automatically drew attention to your topic and the soul purpose of your essay.

Dear Noah,
DeleteYour essay had a great topic that was used to its fullest potential by your strong examples. Using examples from your own life is something that alot of people back down on but it can really benefit an essay, like it did yours. What stood out about your essay was that it seemed like you had a strong "drive" in writing it.

Success
ReplyDeleteSuccess is a thing that brings joy, happiness, and pleasure into our lives. Everyone in their life no matter who you are, has experienced some kind of success. It can go from winning a football game, to getting an A on a test. There are many different types of success. Too many to even count. But what exactly is the meaning of success? The definition of it?
First I’m going to start with winning. Winning is obviously a type of success. Its also a very pleasing one. I mean no one likes to lose. To some, losing is not even a option. At the same time, if you do lose, it is not a failure. Compared to success, a failure is when you don’t try your hardest and you don’t give it your 110%. That is a true failure. To me winning isn’t all it takes to succeed. To absolutely succeed, I feel you must know that you gave everything you have to try to accomplish whatever you are doing. You must give your 110% and no matter what the outcome ends up to be, you know that you have succeeded in the end.
The second type of success is, as the dictionary states the attainment of popularity. Yes, to some people, Such as the “cool kids” in school, popularity is success in their eyes. To me, that is totally retarded. Success should not mean how popular you are, but instead, how hard you try. How much effort you give is how much you will succeed. The more effort you give, the more success you will obtain. So in my eyes, and many others. Success is not how popular you are but how much you try.
The last type of success is the accomplishment of your aim or purpose. If you are trying to get an A on your test, and you study like no tomorrow. You will most likely succeed on your test. But if you lag on studying and just be lazy, you will most likely not succeed and will not accomplish what your aim was.
Honestly, no one can tell you if you succeed or not. The only person who knows if you succeeded or failed is yourself. You are the only person that knows if you gave your all, and your 110%. It can go from playing your heart out and a football field, to studying like no tomorrow for your final exam. Success depends on how much YOU want whatever you’re going for.

Dear Chaz,
DeleteWonderful essay! I loved how you made your opinion known very strongly throughout this essay. The way that you broke down the definition of success into three different types made it very easy to comprehend as well as easy to follow while reading. It seemed like you really tried to stress the importance of giving "110%", and that success is dependent on how hard you try, rather than how popular you are, and i couldn't agree more. In my opinion, this was a very successful essay. Great job!

Dear Chaz,
DeleteYour essay to me was structured very nicely. I 100% agree with you on just because you win something doesn't mean you have gained success, the real success is giving it your all. Overall it was well written, good job!
Haylei Sheldon
Dear Chaz,
DeleteThe way that you have constructed your essay was very easy to follow. I to, agree that success comes from you and only you. If you work hard and you did all that you could possibly don and feel good about what you have done then that is the real success.

Dedication
ReplyDeleteDedication brings focus, patience, and determination for people to work on in their everyday life. Many people want to know what it really means to be dedicated to something. Some don't know how to dedicate anything to someone or something. You could find a lot of people including myself that could dedicate at least one thing in their life. Dedicating something for a short period of time is not really consider dedication because you're not putting time into the that certain object.
Dedicating to something is literally being determined that you know it is a real thing that you believe in and you are willing to put the time and effort in it. Some people dedicate their life towards work, fun, religion, etc. People that dedicate their life towards work will give a huge amount of time in their job or business. Earning money and a satisfy paying customer will give that person a strive for more of that with the next person that comes in.
People that dedicate their life with fun will go to any extreme that will give them that pleasure that will excite them. So they dedicate their lives and strive for the happiness in excitement they could find. Such as going to a theme park, traveling to exotic places, sky diving, etc. the list could go on.
People like me dedicate to a lot of things in life, some can't be fulfilled, others can be succeeded with effort that you put into it. Something that I know I dedicate to myself is being a person who is self directed and willing to do what it takes to stay on track and not get distracted. You have to put time in what your dedicating because you would not have the slightest idea on how or what you are even doing with it.
You can always be dedicated to something as long as you are willing to put the work and time into it, anything is possible. The important key to this is patience, if you don't have that you basically don't have the effort for dedication

It Gets Better
ReplyDeleteYour life sucks, doesn't it? Maybe you're the only one without your own phone or you're the only one without a boyfriend or a girlfriend. Maybe you've been told that your clothes are "so last year" or that your hair is "a choice you'll regret making in the future." No? Okay, maybe you've been told that you have no reason to exist. Maybe that one person you saw as your hero turned out to be a liar and now you don't know what to believe in. Maybe you've been called horrid names while growing up. Maybe you've been thrown to the ground and stepped on and broken and beaten so many times that at this point, you feel nothing when people hurt you. Maybe you're tired of feeling numb.
We've all been hurt at some point in our lives. When it persists, we go for help. When we go for help, we are told that it gets better. We hear it so often that it eventually loses all meaning to us. We should never have to believe that our problems don't get any better.
The words "it gets better" have been said countless times before to those who need it. People have been told that things get better because that's what they want to believe, but is it really true? When people tell you that it gets better, it doesn't mean that they want you to stop complaining. It does not mean that you need to suck it up and stop being a whiny little baby. "It gets better" definitely does not mean that things will change for you overnight.
"It gets better" means that even if you are drowning in the pits of hell and Satan is laughing at you with an ice cold beer in his hand, you will get up and pour that beer down his pants, spit in his face, and take a nice cold shower afterwards because you deserve it. Even if people are throwing tons and tons of poop at your face, you will be able to wash it all off somehow and you'll be as clean as a hospital. Even if it seems as though the entire planet is stepping on you, you will be able to get up to dust yourself off and have them apologize to you. It means that if your life is so awful right now, it will somehow get better.
No matter how many times you hear the words "it gets better," it is always true. When they tell you that it gets better, they mean it. They don't want you to give up. Nobody wants you to give up. You should never give up regardless of how awful it may seem now. If you're going through hell, keep going because you will make your way out eventually.
It gets so much better.

Laziness is not a character trait. It is more an instinct, or perhaps an inherent characteristic of living things, for it is part of all humans, and, in fact, most animals in general. Laziness is an essential part of humans and many other types of animals; it is an instinct that helps to ensure the survival of the individual possessing it. Laziness is not a vice, but in modern times it has been accentuated in humans beyond the norm of the natural world. It soon becomes sloth, which is a vice.
ReplyDeleteLaziness helps to ensure survival by preventing excessive exertion. When an antelope is being chased by a lion on the African savannah, and the lion gives up the chase in lieu of an easier target, the antelope must stop running at some point or suffer complete exhaustion. Inherent laziness speeds this along. Other survival instincts overpower this at times of true danger, but when there is no danger, inborn laziness keeps the antelope from wearing itself out.
This also manifests itself in a human race. There are few humans that want to hurt themselves, and even for those who do, even the best elite runners in the world, succumb to some small dregs of this ancient instinct and stop when the race is over. Those who can push the will to stop the farthest will be those who will win in the end, all other factors being equal.
When training for an endurance sport such as swimming, running, cross-country, or paddling, one must be disciplined enough to push away the desire to stop or slow down until the workout is over. If humans had no inherent laziness, there would be little competition in these types of sports, only those who had the best coaches, equipment, and genetics would win. The “mental toughness” aspect athletes who perform these sports talk about would be negated.
There is another kind of laziness, an extreme type of laziness, or sloth, that is more of a character trait, and not present in all animals, just humans. This is what most people call laziness, the unwillingness to do work such as daily tasks. This is not useful in the natural world, and has grown stronger with the advance of technology. It is this type of laziness that has caused the advent of all types of energy-saving devices.
So to conclude, laziness, in my opinion, is a natural self-protection method, which, in the present lifestyle of humans today, has magnified manifold and become sloth. Sloth has led to the creation of new technologies, but it has also contributed to the obesity problem, as people no longer need to walk anywhere, if they own a car, and other such things.

Misjudgement
ReplyDeleteWe’ve probably all been made fun of, right? Maybe some more than others. This happens because people have begun to judge others on their appearance, rather than for who they actually are.
Just because I like to wear dark clothing, doesn’t mean I like to sit in graveyards and worship satan. Just because I have multiple piercings, doesn’t mean I’m masochistic. Just because I wear more eyeliner than most girls, doesn’t make me goth. None of these things should make me anymore different than you. But that’s what people fail to believe. The way I dress shouldn’t define the way you think of me. Don’t think I can’t hear you whisper about me when I walk by you. Don’t think I don’t feel you staring at me when I walk into the classroom.
But, this is not an “oh, pity me, my life sucks” essay. I’m going to admit I do judge people, too. To the majority of girls at our school who all wear shorts that look like denim underwear to school, and have your cleavage hanging out, yeah, I’m going to judge you on that. Most people will. It doesn’t make you “popular” dressing like hooker. It gives people the wrong impression. I mean for all I know, you could be the nicest person in the world, and may have never touched drugs in your entire life.
Don’t act like who you aren’t just to fit in, you could get mixed up in the wrong crowd. Don’t care what people think of you. Obviously, I don’t. You need to find the courage to be who you are. Be unique. Stand out from the crowd.
To people who do judge: STOP IT. Just because someone is unique, doesn’t give you the right to make fun of them. Let them express themselves without feeling discouraged. It can cause more harm than you know. Maybe they have problems at home, maybe somebody close to them just died. You don’t know.
If you look or are into other things than others, it doesn't make you an outcast. I guess what I’m saying is, don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
Elise McDonald

DeleteIt thought it was great you talked about yourself in the essay, it made the topic more real and believable. Intelligence
ReplyDelete“Intelligence” is a word that, until seemingly recently, described one person’s ability to make decisions compared to another’s. Although that definition is what most people would say if asked what intelligence means, is that really the way it’s used? All my life “intelligence” and its synonyms have been thrown out whenever somebody accomplished something mentally.
There has always been a “smartest” or most “intelligent” kid or group of kids in my classes. Most people just write them off as being smarter than them, but is that really true? In most of my experiences, the “smartest” kids in the class have simply been the ones with the best grades and grades are influenced by a number of things. A flunking student can be just as capable of making good life decisions as an honor roll student, the difference is that one works harder than the other or is not hampered by outside of school problems. Similarly, some things are more about what you know than how you use it. Many tests are just a bunch of questions related to a subject that even the stupidest of people could memorize, yet someone who does well on that test would often be branded as “intelligent”. It’s not about whether or not that person is truly intelligent but about whether or not the word follows the same definition people think it does.
Genius is another word related to intelligence that has been skewed in definition. “genius” by common definition would be someone like Einstein who is literally more intelligent than any average person, many legitimate geniuses would be affected by something like Asperger’s syndrome and thus be more mentally capable than others. However, someone described as “genius” these days could simply be someone who got a good grade on one of those tests mentioned previously.
Intelligence is not the only word with a vague meaning, but that’s okay. A word doesn’t need a precise and widely used set-in-stone definition to be a good and useful word. Although everyone from the most articulate and educated class of people down to the working class may have different views of the word “intelligence”, it is still a strong and meaningful word.
MASON SCHWARZE
I.D.E.A.S.
Dear Mason,
DeleteI really enjoyed reading your essay. Your main point, being that intelligence as a word has been "skewed" I believe is valid after reading your essay. You also explained and defined the word intelligence in it's true and correct meaning. Good job on your last and final essay of this Summer.
-Matthew Steinohrt
Dear Mason,
DeleteThe way you started your essay by showing what people think intelligence is and then building off it later for a more precise meaning of what you are talking about was a really good way to draw in the audience. Also the way you ended the essay by saying it's okay for everyone to have a little bit of a different definition shows that you are open minded and gave the essay a very inclusive feel.

Underdog
ReplyDeleteIn every competition, in every battle, there are at least two sides. One of these sides is the most likely winner, the one that has the better odds. Then, there’s the underdog. The side that is more likely to lose than win, the side that most people would bet against. The underdog can come in all shapes and sizes. They can be a sports team that hasn’t been doing very well or a certain brand or stock that is most likely to fail compared to another. An underdog is the one less-favored in a competition.
An example of an underdog in sports would be when the Steelers beat the Green Bay Packers in 2011 when the Packers had a better record. The famous “Dewey Defeats Truman” picture is another more meaningful and historical example because even though he was the underdog, Harry Truman actually won in the 1948 election. However, not all underdogs win. For a football example, In 1986, the New England Patriots were demolished by the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX. The Patriots were the obvious underdogs and they got crushed accordingly. The 1936 election was another example of the underdog getting crushed. When Alf Landon, the Republican frontrunner only won two states while Franklin D. Roosevelt won forty-six. Being an underdog does not doom you to failure or push you to success, it does point out the most probable winner and loser.
Most people including myself have had experiences being and beating the underdog. When I played against this Freshman from another school in tennis, he was the obvious underdog for being one year younger and his whole family told me that they hoped I “wouldn’t go overkill” on him. After winning the first set, the freshman came back and won almost every game. Maybe it was overconfidence or maybe he just played better. No matter, the underdog won. I have played against many opponents from my own school (not naming names) and have won even though I was the underdog. When people asked who won they were surprised with the results. I, the underdog won.
Everyone has had experience with the word underdog. Whether they were the underdog or competed against the underdog. The word underdog is not the most complex nor the most simplest of words. However, it is an important word that will be used by the competitors of generations to come.

Definition Essay
ReplyDeleteSuccess is something we all strive towards. It is implanted in us as seed from the very day we are born. We are told to spend our whole life trying to reach it, not to let anything get in our way or prevent us from becoming successful. Success is supposed to be the pinnacle of humanity. If you are successful then you have made your life worth while and are supposed to be able to die a happy person. All through our life we are told about success and what more it will bring to our life. But what really is success? With all of these amazing possibilities the definition must be long and very detailed. But doesn’t it mean a different thing to each and every one of us?
Every person has in their own mind a different definition of success, how it applies directly to their life and what exactly it means to them. To some it’s simply getting a good job and being able to support themselves in the future. But I believe your definition of success is determined by your personal goals pertaining to success. Figuring out what success means to you can only happen when you decide that there is something you want to accomplish in your future that will make you satisfied with your contributions to your own quality of life. Mine came the day I saw what the dedication of medical professionals could do for my sisters life. Without these people dedicating years of their life to find successful surgeries for tumors on the brainstem my sister may not be here today. I, through many hospital visits saw that these doctors would stop at nothing but absolute success. Their determination to have success by helping others raised their own quality of life. I from that point on decided that in order for me to be successful in life I would have to find a way not to just better my quality of life but also that of others around me. I may not become a neurosurgeon but I know in order for me to feel that I have succeeded in life I must do something, it could be anything to help the lives of others around me. That is how I found my definition of success.
We have been told that the definition is simply what you read in the dictionary. It’s not, it’s the way you take a word and interpret it or put it into context in your own life. This may not be the way we are taught to understand words in school but if you only know a word from what is says in the dictionary and not what it says in real life then how can you truly use it in your life. The world may have planted this certain perception of success into us from the moment we were born but it’s really up to us to determine what we feel success is in our own life. Mine is to raise the quality of my own life by helping improve the quality of others.

Dear Wylie,
Deleteyour essay truly pinpointed success and what it can do to people as well as what it is. I liked how you mentioned that the success of those doctors improved their quality of life because they knew they were helping people. The example showed how finding your own success can be influenced by more than just your own pleasure and it gave more depth to your definition of success.

Dear Wylie,
DeleteGreat essay! I enjoyed reading the part about how each person has different branches of success in their own lives.

To be beautiful means to please the senses or mind aesthetically. But, what does this mean when referring to a person? What is a beautiful person? When you picture a beautiful woman you might see curly brown hair that frames her tan face with shaped eyebrows, long eyelashes, and full lips, along with a tall curvy body. Or you might see a woman with blonde hair straight as ……… and a curvy body as well. When you picture a beautiful man, or as they would probably prefer, handsome man, you may imagine a tall, muscular man, with abs, back muscles, and hazel or light brown eyes.
ReplyDeleteImagine if that “beautiful” girl talks crap about all her friends, treats everyone like they’re her slaves because in her mind she’s a queen, rude in public, cheats on her boyfriend, and on and on. Or that tall guy with muscles, he beats on his girlfriend, loud and obnoxious in public places, always angry, destructive, etc. Should they still be considered beautiful? In my opinion that’s not pleasing the senses or mind. But they have beautiful exteriors, right? So they are beautiful people.
But maybe, just maybe, beauty goes beyond skin. It goes beyond perfection, past perfect hair, a perfect face, and a perfect body. True beauty comes from within. To be truly beautiful means being honest, caring, kind, generous, thoughtful, and so much more. It means to be true to yourself and thinking of others along the way. Okay so none of us can be perfect all the time and always think of others, but a person with inner beauty would be able to admit they did something wrong or made a mistake and make things better again. Rather than being stuck up and just not care.
I think the most beautiful people are the most selfless ones. The ones that put others before themselves. Now it doesn’t necessarily mean they all have to help with some sort of charity, it means that the happiness and welfare of others is just as important as their own. People who don’t put down others whether to their face or behind their back. A happy person is a beautiful person.
A person with a beautiful face is nothing with an ugly heart. But a person with a kind heart, now that, that is a beautiful person, regardless of their skin color, hair, eyebrows, clothes, etc.

Dear Naea,
DeleteI really love the ideas that you support in this essay about being a beautiful person. I really love the idea of a girl getting what she wants because in her head, she feels like she deserves the best and high quality things in life, like a queen. I enjoyed reading your essay! See you in junior year! :)

Dear Naea,
DeleteI really enjoyed how you expressed what you think is actual beauty because I agree with you. The fact that outer beauty is just one characteristic to capture the attention of someone but the real beauty that keeps them around is the true inner beauty of them. This reminds me of a quote by Kate Angell "Outer beauty attracts but inner beauty captivates." Which is very true because who would want to stay with someone that is handsome but doesn't treat them right? Not me that's for sure.

ReplyDeleteDo You Really Know How to Ramble?
ReplyDeleteWhen you walk onto the campus of Kapaa High School, you'll hear terms that may not make sense to you, such as a "Darrel" or "sup around hea" or even "auti". But the most commonly used word that is misunderstood at our school is the word ramble. It's meaning has changed from something boring to incredibly exciting and cool.
When you look in a dictionary, the word ramble means to "wander around in a leisurely, aimless manner". This term simply means to walk around with no purpose or reason. When a person “rambles”, they wander aimlessly. However, our society has given it a new meaning. Instead of wandering without a purpose, it means exactly the opposite. The students at Kapaa High have made rambling seem like the cool thing to do. Rambling is now defined as going through dirt roads at high speeds, testing your car (or trucks) limits. it has become what all the “boyz” (and yes, I did spell boyz with a “z” on the end on purpose) do.
It is weird to think how our society has changed the meaning of a boring word into something that actually sounds interesting. Its common to hear phrases such as “Ho, lets ramble this weekend” or “I rambled at Polis” or even “Can I ramble too?”
Society is weird like that. It changes words, so the good become bad, the bad become good, and the boring become exciting.
Dear Bryson,
DeleteYou continue to have a great writing style, that is very pleasing and easy to read. I like how you chose to define a word commonly used by average highs schoolers, because i think we all can agree that sometimes even WE don't know what we are saying. The examples you gave of when and how people would use the word ramble were also very helpful in making it easy to understand what you were talking about. I wonder what word us teenagers will come up with next! Keep up the wonderful writing.

It’s Okay
ReplyDeleteMost words are confined by an ordinary dictionary definition, and don’t usually have multiple meanings. “Okay” is not one of those words. In my opinion, the word okay has at least five different possible meanings that are extremely diverse, as far as what the context of their use is. Ranging from a measure of competency, to how you’re feeling, emotionally and physically. Whatever form of the word you choose will determine the definition that you will be using, and believe me! Okay has A LOT of different derivatives.
Everyone at least once in their lifetime has been asked, “Are you okay?” When someone asks you this, they are inquiring on how you are feeling emotionally, physically, or even mentally. But what does it really mean to be okay. Personally I believe that you can be put under the category “okay” when everything is about average in your life. Whether it be that you are doing average in sports and academics, or the problems in your life are normal, and you are able to handle them just fine.
This special four letter word can also be a way of saying yes or confirming that you understand what is happening at the moment. If someone asks you to do something that may not be the most desirable task, your answer will probably be okay rather than a flat out yes. The reason for this is, it implies that you don’t necessarily want to perform the task or favor, but you will do it anyway. In addition, like I said in the first sentence okay can mean that you are comfortable with the circumstances at hand. For example, when you receive a text message saying, “I’m coming over”, or “I’ll be there in a few minutes”, you would most likely reply with an okie dokie, kk, or a simple okay.
The most commonly used version of okay among most teenagers and young adults, is the dreaded “K.”. I know what you are thinking, but no, I did not put two periods there by accident. In the mind of a typical teenager that capital k followed by a period is symbolic in so many ways. Not only is it an immediate conversation killer, but it also lets you know how the person using it is feeling. Normally when you use this type of okay, it’s because you are extremely irritated, pissed off, or just don’t like the person you are talking to. My advice is, if someone ever texts you a “K.”, proceed with caution.
For such a small and seemingly unimportant word, okay is so versatile, both in its meanings and variations. Although I mentioned quite a few of its possible definitions, there are still many more and I predict the number will continue to grow. So I ask you friends, “Are you okay?”

Ha'ole
ReplyDelete"A word used mainly in Hawaii to describe a white person. Depending on how you say it, the word can mean either an insult or just a fact." -Urban Dictionary.
Growing up in Hawai'i, the word ha'ole has increasingly become a hard hitting word throughout my life. What is it about this word, that when said in the right tone can send such a deeply sickening feeling through my guts; but when used in jovial moods I sometimes feel nothing at all? It is the hate behind the definition. My earliest memory of being prejudiced against was in the second grade. My classmates and I were all settling down onto a big rug for story time. As I wiggled into place I over heard a boy named Shawn whispering to Dylan "I don't want to sit next to Zuri cus she's a white ha'ole." At that age, I barely had a grasp on what the word implied, but I remember immediately feeling an intensely insulted and sorrowful feeling. I had never done anything to this boy, but he had felt the necessity to change places in order to be away from me... I asked my dad about it after school and he laughed and said "What other kind of ha'oles are there?"
Originally meaning "without breath" after the seemingly breathless white people first encountered Hawaiians, the word evolved to replace the word malihini which means foreigner or stranger. Even this definition, although implying white people resemble corpses, evokes a less hurtful feeling than the common usage of the word. If the emotion coming from the person calling you a ha'ole is not harsh, -which it is as often as it is not- It is easy to remain feeling at ease. The same goes under the circumstances of one ha'ole to another. I believe this is because it can't really ever be an insult if used by another white person, because they bear the same title. It is a very useful word, which carries much emotion and context, so I would not argue that it should not be used. What I want to know is why it can be thrown around so aggressively with no trace of remorse.
I have met one person in my life who openly expressed their racism towards black people to me. It happened to be friday night, which is part of the reason I have been pondering this topic of ha'oleism lately. A waitress I work with came up to me and clearly stated that she will not serve black people. I was stunned half way between total shock and complete disgust. I found the fact that, anyone who heard a statement like this would be completely fascinated with disgust, amazing. She was so utterly wrong, so barbaric! It must be equally amazing that, multiple times a week, I encounter numerous statements equally as barbaric towards Caucasians, but this is normal.
Today I went to my friend Kepa's house for his birthday. A blonde boy from California came with my boy friend and I. Upon arriving, Ikaika shouts at our malihini friend "hey you f*ing ha'ole boy! Take out the trash." Slightly confused at why someone was yelling at him, our friend took a second to react. As he stood up to comply, Ikaika scoffed "That wasn't a f*ing question." Why was anything about this situation accepted? Why did everyone in the garage remain quiet and act like this interaction was tolerable? Ikaika was allowed to order our friend around like a slave, and if he had refused Ikaika probably would have tried to fight him. It is not okay. I would like everyone to understand fully the baggage that comes with their language. The definition of ha'ole is complex, and can be very degrading. It is crucial to always be aware of the energy we put out everyday, because not only will how we treat others eventually come back to us, but it is what makes the world the place it is.

Nice!
ReplyDeleteIf someone were to ask you to define the word “nice”, how would you answer? Some may say that nice is being friendly and polite. Others might describe nice as pleasing and delightful, such as a nice visit. But are those the only ways to define this word? The answer is no. Nice has many definitions, and can be used in many different ways. Like from describing your day, to telling your little siblings the right way to treat one another.
Nice can be characterized by, showing, or requiring great accuracy, precision, skill, tact, care, or delicacy. In other words, it's like describing someone's skill. Just like when someone scores 30 points worth of baskets in a basketball game. You'd assume that their shooting skills are nice, or watching someone pass the ball. You'd cheer them on saying something like, “nice pass!”. Aside from sports, nice can also be used to describe an artist's painting when complimenting their skill.
When someone says that a person is nice, they usually refer to their personality. People who are nice are friendly, have a positive attitude, and talk to others calmly. Nice can also be a synonym for beautiful. For instance, someone with hazel eyes. You can say that they have nice eyes. Same goes for hair, and style.
Nice is a word with many definitions. Even though I described more than one meaning, there's probably way more that I missed. Its positive definition can definitely bring a smile to one's face, perhaps a nice one. So, have a nice day everybody!

Maturity and Immaturity
ReplyDeleteTheirs always going to be that overly mature person in your class. Who knows their story, maybe there was an incident in their lives which caused them to take on a bigger role which made them mature faster. But on the other hand their are the other people, those immature teenagers that you seem to look at everyday asking yourself “ are you sure your not supposed to be in 5th grade?”.
The people that respond to you in perfect grammar, who speak in there broad vocabulary and actually know what the words mean. Those are some stereotypical traits that most people believe. In other words they think being mature means you're just really intelligent, no. Intelligence has to do with some of it, don't get me wrong. But being mature can be described in so many different ways.
Maturity. Being able to remain calm when things take an unexpected left turn. It's respecting authority and following someones set guidelines. Maturity. Being able to recognize that you're actually wrong in a situation, but able to admit it. Its the ability to stand strong when you're going through a rough patch in your life, and telling yourself that it will all be okay. When you're mature you carry yourself as high as the skyscrapers in new york. Maturity does not in any way stick to one set definition, it's a well rounded word that allows itself to describe people on many different levels.
Now on the other hand theirs immaturity. I know everyone right now can think of at least one immature person, don't lie. Everyone can be immature, no ones perfect. We all have those immature moments that we would like to forget. But some people don't mature as fast as others and that's when the irritation commences.
Being immature is defined as someone who behaves childish. Some people just never grow up completely, thus creating some not so necessary behavior. Like 2 year olds, some people throw tantrums thinking that they will get there way. People who are immature make raunchy and crude comments that they think are just so hilarious, but there really just foolish. Being immature means that you don't consider the consequences to wrong actions. They disrespect responsibility, and wont get done what needs to be done, and sometimes fears any change.
We all mature at some point in our lives, some faster than others . You can always be mature about one thing and immature about the next. You are really the only one that can drive yourself in the direction that you want to go in. So next time lets say you do something wrong, are you going to be the one to stand up and take the blame or push the consequence on someone else ?

ReplyDeleteYour essay was really clear and did an excellent job relating Your ideas on immaturity and maturity to your audience. I like the way you explained that immaturity can also be not taking responsibility for your actions. It wouldn't normally pop into my head as a trait of immaturity, but now that you pointed it out to me, it really is a crucial one. Your essay made me feel like I WANTED to be more mature! To not get mad about things and act like a baby hahaha.

Forgiveness meaning an act of forgiving or state of being forgiven. Another meaning of forgiveness is the willingness to forgive. It was known that the benefit and concepts have been explored in religious thought, social science, and medicine. In most context forgiveness is granted without any expectation of restorative justice, and no response from the other party. Also that the person in wrong must believe in himself to forgive.
ReplyDeleteIn health perspective forgiveness is a decision to let go of resentment and revenge. Forgiveness can help loosen your grip on the negative aspects of your life and focus on the positive. It can lead to feelings of understanding, empathy, and compassion for the person who had done you wrong. But forgiveness isn’t where you deny the person’s responsibility for the hurt they caused you, but forgiving helps you make peace and move on. Benefits of forgiving is healthier relationships, greater spiritual and psychological well-being, less anxiety, less stress and hostility, lower blood pressure, fewer symptoms of depression, and lastly lower alcohol and substance abuse.
Reaching a state of forgiveness is where you consider the value of forgiveness in your life at the time. Next you reevaluate the situation, your reactions, it’s affect on your life, and your health along with your well-being. Then when you are ready actively forgive the person and move on from being the victim unto something more important in your life.

Maturity
ReplyDeletePeople are considered mature if they act older than they really are. If a seven year old does not succumb to another child's taunts we might consider the that child mature. So is maturity not responding to puerile things? Some people might way that being mature is looking bored all the time because no matter how funny something is you can’t react because it might be construed as immature.
Maturity is not taking the banana that they served at lunch and putting it in your pocket. Because even though you could make tons of jokes about it you know that, that is an immature thing to do and your friends will look down on you for it. Maturity is not laughing at someone else’s pain no matter how hilarious it is, as that might make them feel worse. Maturity is knowing how to deal with your emotions and not simply blocking them out. If you simply block out your emotions or refuse with them, that is not maturity. Maturity is dealing with a problem instead of trying to get out of it. It is doing something that you have to do no matter how awkward or uncomfortable it might make you feel.
Many people may think that being “cool” and being “mature” are the same thing, but they are not. Being cool is not reacting to anything, never showing that you are surprised or jealous. If you are mature you are able to deal with things instead of pretending they didn't happen. Someone who thinks they are cool might think they are too cool to help an old lady cross the street. A mature person, would want to help people who are less able than they are. If you are mature you help people, if you are cool you blow people off. So no, being “cool” and being “mature” are not the same thing.
Maturity is often misconstrued as something that it is not, like “coolness” or a person simply not caring. Both those things have certain aspects in common with maturity, but they don’t capture the entirety of what is means to be mature. If you are ever lucky enough to meet a truly mature person you will without a doubt know.

Waterman
ReplyDeleteWhen something appears to be so simple, and is exposed to a number of various foreign influences, it slowly becomes distorted and altered from it original derivation, existing now in costumed from seldom used as it was initially intended. One of the most prime examples of this alteration can be seen in deformation of the term ‘Waterman’.
Though the first known use of the term was in sometime during the 1100’s, it had a wider and more lenient meaning of any man who works or lives on the ocean. This Middle English derivation was less commonly used as the 1500’s approach and was almost lost by the 1800’s. Between these centuries, being a waterman meant only that you had a job on a boat.
At the beginning of the 1900’s, however, the waterman title experienced a reincarnation within the Hawaiian Islands. Inspiring this rebirth were men like Duke Kahanamoku and Eddie Aikau who brought a whole new meaning to the label. Duke was the original effigy of a waterman, spending his life in the ocean whether fishing, canoeing, diving, or most popularly surfing. Everything about his life was centered around the ocean. He set a standard for waterman across the world for the next hundred years. No man besides Duke has made such a statement in the ocean as Eddie Aikau. Beside being well and widely known for big wave surfing, Eddie spent the majority of his life on the beaches of O’ahu diving, sailing, and working as the first lifeguard hired by the County of Honolulu.
Over the years as more people from around the world have been drawn to the islands through the surfing industry, ‘waterman’ has become a lightly thrown around term to every hardcore surfer that comes about. When in actuality, it means more than just charging the biggest waves or winning the most contests. Watermen are able in all aspects of the ocean and its resources, capable of navigating, surviving, and thriving in any of its conditions.
Next time you bestow a title upon someone, or are given one yourself, think about the meaning of it. Where is it from? Who else carries it? Make sure you have a complete understanding of the name before the true significance is lost.

Strength
ReplyDeleteWhen people think of strength, they usually think of a big buff person lifting a thousand pounds or pulling a train car with just a rope. Yes, to do that you must be very strong physically, but the strength I am talking about, is mental strength. Everybody, no matter how small you are physically, has this. In fact, some of the mentally strongest people I know are physically the smallest.
Mental strength basically determines everything in your life. Think about a time when you had to build up the courage to ask something that was very hard to ask. More importantly, think of a time when you were afraid to do something like finally mountain bike down that hill that was your goal for so long. Both of these take tremendous amounts of mental strength and every single person alive has experienced moments that require mental strength.
The most important form of mental strength, is not giving up when you reach a rough spot in something. For example, my cousin was born without her right coronary artery. This made it so blood was not being exported from her heart properly and almost killed her. She had a surgery right when she was born, at two years old, eight years old, and then sixteen years old. To replace that artery that she was missing, the doctors had to put in one from a pig and put a stint in it to keep it open when she was eight. By the time se was sixteen, it was time t replace it and they found that the stint had poked all the way through her artery and was starting to stab into her heart. They said that if they had waited any longer to do the surgery, the stint would have gone completely into her heart and killed her. Luckily, it didn’t though. What did what did happen, though, was her heart stopped in the middle of the procedure. The hooked her up to life support real fast and she somehow was brought back to life. The only reason she made it through the procedure is because the doctors had very strong mental strength and didn’t give up on her even when they though it was all over.
My cousin is now 18 years old and is in college she lives a very happy life and every year is a councilor at a camp for kids with the same sort of heart problem as her. Every day of her life is thanks to that team of surgeons that had lots of mental strength and never gave up until the very end.

Life
ReplyDeleteWhat is the true meaning of life. In a practical sense it means to be able to reproduce, grow, respond to stimuli, maintain homeostasis, etc. That’s not a good enough answer though, people need to understand what the purpose is. We want to know the why not the how.
To a religious person life could mean being blessed by god to walk this earth with your kin. The Old Testament states that on the sixth day humankind was created and “God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply’” (Genesis 1:28). A person who lives by the literal interpretation of the bible would say that the meaning of life is to create more life, to reproduce.
Someone more practically-minded, a scientist perhaps, might agree with the latter statement (that the meaning of life is to reproduce), but for different reasons. They may argue that without reproduction there would be no man, therefore the purpose of living is to continue the human legacy. The only reason that we are here is so that we can continue to be here, if that makes any sense.
Now, someone more like me, who thinks in a more philosophical manner would say that life has no true meaning, it’s up to you to interpret it. Or that life is merely what you make of it, that the meaning is embedded within what you do and the outcome of your existence is your purpose.
Whatever your opinion, the fact remains that nobody will ever know the meaning of life. Perhaps we are not intended to know, but to choose it ourselves. Or it could quite possibly be that we already know the meaning of life but we don’t know it as being that, just another piece of misunderstood information.
Good - Worthy of respect; honorable, of high quality; excellent.
ReplyDeleteGood. This word is probably one of the most overused, meaningless, and dull words of the human language. I would bet you say the word “good” over 100 times a day, and only a handful of those times are you actually using the correct definition.
“How did you do on your math test?” “Good” “How was that new movie?” “Good”
“How was your dinner last night?” “Good” That word “good” tells absolutely nothing about anything. Did you mean it was, all right? Mediocre? Fantastic? Excellent? We will never know! Humans have completely destroyed and bashed this word. We’ve ripped it of its definition and left it without one. I couldn’t tell you what the word “good” means today. It could mean just about anything you want it to. It has become just a filler word for emotions and feelings and likes, or merely a word you use when you don’t know what else to say.
The alleged “root” of GOOD is ghedh (to unite, join, fit). Good used to have a meaning. If something was good it was respectable and honorable. It was morally excellent and righteous and virtuous. It was united and proper and well behaved. It wasn’t just an iffy adjective about your date. It didn’t mean the movie was okay, or your dinner was mediocre. It was a word that was used to describe actions. “Good” use to get your point, ideas, and feelings across to others.
We have butchered this word into nothing. “Good” doesn’t have a definition anymore. It is a weak word, a boring word. “Good” has lost all of its strength. It has lost its power. It has evolved into a conversation ender and a bad reply to a text message. We have lost a word with such heavy meaning. It is now lazy, unthoughtful, and misused.

Career pressure in school and at home
ReplyDelete“if you don't get good grades you will never be successful life” is probably a term that you have heard over and over by your teachers and parents. Some teachers define success as making lots of money, owning a big house, and living the life as a conventional american family. Success is not becoming a lawyer or a doctor. Nor is it to be the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.
I remember when I was 5, this lady asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, naturally I said I wanted to be a Graffiti artist, she said, “Graffiti artists usually don’t become successful but thats cool”. Of Course I don't want to be an artist now, but even when you are kid, being successful is always an issue. My dad was expected to be a lawyer when he was to be grown up. He now teaches surf lessons and shapes surfboards. Does he have a lot of money? no, is he happy? yes.
Career pressure can cause serious issues in someone's life. A kid has been told all of his life what expectations he must live up to and certain criteria that has to be met. Some kids have been trained their whole life to have a certain career, because parents want what's best for their child and themselves, but once he has finally gets the diploma and starts working he/she is probably going to wonder “when do I become happy?”. Study show that if you are not happy then you are completely and utterly DEPRESSED.
Teachers should teach us how to make the road in which we choose that is not measured by success, but of how happy we are doing it. Don't get me wrong, people become doctors or lawyers for the reason of helping people which is a beautiful thing, but when people are hounding you to do something just to get money that is when it turns into an ugly thing. We young people should be able to forge our own path. In the end, most of us are just square pegs in round holes.

Bravery
ReplyDeleteBravery is often sought after in most societies. It is considered that with bravery you are able to do anything and can in most cases have any other trait such as loyalty or honor. Although many people construe bravery as a good trait it actually can be bad too.
Ever since I can remember i have never been particularly brave. I have a multitude of phobias and am paranoid of almost anything. But anyone even someone like me can execute bravery. Bravery doesn't have to be great acts of heroism it is anything that you do out of your comfort zone.
This means that you could be brave when jumping off of a bridge into a river. Bravery isn't always good though. People say that suicide is cowardly but in my opinion it takes an awful lot of bravery in order to be able to bring yourself to end it all.
I'm not promoting suicide, all i'm saying is that bravery isn't always a good trait it's more of a neutral one. Without bravery Hitler would have never been brave enough to advocate Aryan supremacy and the KKK would have never been brave enough to execute blacks or even advocate racism.
With bad comes good and with good comes bad. Without bravery true the Holocaust or any war would have never happened, but without it no one would have been brave or courageous. Galileo would have never been brave enough to stand up to the catholic church to say that the world was round. Indeed no one would have been brave enough to even venture out to get food or kill sabers for warmth and the human race and any other superinteligent race would virtually be non-existent. So thank you bravery for the good times and the bad.

Integrity
ReplyDeleteWhat is integrity? Some may compare it to honesty, but they are only half right. Integrity is much more than being simply honest. One cannot know the true value to the word integrity until they experience it. Integrity, in general terms, is to be honest to your self. People naturally lie to themselves saying they feel fine when really they just saw a murder. Integrity defines a person once they use it.
Say your job is to wash planes for an airline company. Earlier on in the day, your boss really reamed you a new one for missing a dirt spot the last time on your section of one of the jets. While you’re working, you notice a small screw fall from one of the wings you were washing. Naturally, this isn’t an okay thing to be brushed aside. However, you’re feeling on edge and you don’t want to go talk to your boss about it because you’re afraid you’ll attack him. So, you tell yourself you never saw anything and you finish washing the plane and head home for some Netflix and popcorn. What went wrong? Well, you didn’t use integrity to fess up to the screw misplacement. Integrity shows someone’s moral character, and since you lied to yourself, you had horrible integrity. Good integrity would be to immediately report this hazard no matter the risk on your job. Many lives could be saved by one man’s honest moral integrity.
In my life, integrity played a huge role into shaping my own moral character. Many times have I made a mistake, but many times have I not told anyone about it. Then one day I joined the Civil Air Patrol and was taught about integrity. From then on I was honest about everything I did. Even today I exercised integrity. For a while I was in possession of my friend’s videogame disc. Upon question, he did not want it back, so I dropped him $20 out of honest morality. I cannot take things without good conscience, because I have integrity. Someone without discovering honest to God integrity by the age of 15 is not leading a good life and should be helped.

The True Meaning of Ambition
ReplyDeleteAmbition. A personality trait that has come to be associated with a desire for rank, status, fame, fortune or power that one does not already possess. A central theme in countless novels, movies, and plays; Ambition is almost universally portrayed as being a negative trait, likely due to the fact that the antagonists goals in such mediums are usually defined by this trait, and thusly has come to be defined as “evil”. Why has something that is defined by a desire to become better than we already are, come to be know as something immoral?
The Oxford dictionary defines Ambition as a “strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work”. From this, one can infer that ambition is not negative, but has come to be seen as such by different works of entertainment that have sought to pass on the aesop that a desire for more than one has, is evil. Another reason that such a demonization of a word that should be considered as a virtue could be due to its similarity to the definition of Greed, which is as defined by the Oxford dictionary as “an intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food.” One can assume from this parallelism that somewhere along the line, a popular work had ambition and greed as being synonymous and negative traits, likely fueled by the bais of the author.
This work was probably the immensely popular 16th century play “Macbeth” which told the story of the titular character Macbeth who in the first scene receives a prophecy from a triumvirate of witches that he will one day become King of all Scotland. Consumed by ambition, which is the leading theme of the play, Macbeth murders the presently reigning king and takes the throne for himself, He soon becomes engulfed in feelings of guilt and paranoia, and soon becomes a tyrannical ruler forced to commit countless murders to protect himself from rebellion and suspicion. The ensuing bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly takes Macbeth into the realms of madness. All in all it did not portray ambition as a virtue, in fact it was quite the opposite and the playwright William Shakespeare likely wrote the piece during the reign of James I, who was a patron of Williams acting company, out of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during James’s reign, “Macbeth” most likely reflects the playwright’s relationship with the sovereign, which one can infer, was not very favorable.
However, despite all this, in many situations in the modern day, ambition is highly regarded. Job applications often ask for ambitious candidates, entrepreneurs are admired for their ambition and energy, and any country destined for a future needs to have ambitious plans for growth. Despite this however, Ambition is also still associated with negative characteristics such as greed, intolerance, and arrogance. Ambition is also often associated with ruthlessness in the modern day sense blocking out human feelings such as friendship, respect for others, or compassion. Finally, ambition is regarded as having the effect of solitude: the individual wants power at any price, and the reward is often loneliness or isolation. Stories usually paint this outcome as “just desserts” which is to say that they had it coming, which only furthers the demonization of the word.

The True Meaning of Ambition (Continued)
ReplyDeleteWith this in mind, one should still realize these negative connotations should not stop us from being ambitious in our day to day life. One must realize being ambitious means to understand that we have value and that we can become better. Without plans, we plan to fail, but ambition helps us map out paths for success in our personal, family, or professional lives. Ambition also possess the trait of determination, an unflinching desire to never give up your goals. When problems occur, ambitious people find a way around them. In addition, being ambitious should make us more adaptable and tolerant: by including other people in our ambitions we all move forward towards the bright future that looms ahead, Ambition does not have to mean a solitary goal: it can be a vision for a city, the elimination of a disease or the improvement of a community.
In conclusion, ambition is often portrayed negatively, particularly by people who have failed themselves. We should not let these people, who are nothing more than fools, delude us from our goals. Without ambition, our lives become mechanical and meaningless, and all of us become consumed by sloth and apathy. We need to celebrate ambition and enjoy the better present and future it brings with it.

DeleteLeadership
ReplyDeleteLeadership is a word that people love to throw around. But do the people that use it even know what it really is? It is assumed that when a team or group is successful, the most prominent member (Star Player, Coach) is championed as the quote unquote “leader”. These people might not even know what they’re doing. Just take a look at the last Super Bowl. Ravens Quarterback Joe Flacco was named Super Bowl MVP. Did he have a great game? Of course. Was he instrumental in them winning the game? Absolutely. But was he the leader of the team? Not a shot in hell. Linebacker Ray Lewis was the unquestioned leader of the team, and led them through each tough situation. However, people are going to assume that the MVP is the team leader.
By now you might be wondering, “Well, what is leadership then?” I’ve spent years trying to figure out the true meaning of being a leader. Up until a couple months ago, I didn’t fully comprehend what being a leader really meant. From June 24th-July 3rd I attended the National Student Leadership Conference. I got the opportunity to live in a dorm at Fordham University and experience what it’s like to truly LEAD. Just telling someone what they’re doing wrong is NOT leading. A true leader has a vision, and the ability to focus that vision. People can recognize a leader, and will tend to follow that person more so than other people.
Another thing to take into consideration, is walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk. Anybody can say that they have all these plans. A true leader is able to put their words into action and execute the goals they set. A leader must also be able to acknowledge failure, and must be able to learn from their mistakes. A leader does not seek to just have followers, but to really challenge the conventional way of thinking. One of my favorite quotes perfectly portrays this quality. From the words of the late, great Martin Luther King Jr. “A genuine leader is not a searcher of consensus but a molder of consensus.”
Even with all this information now imprinted into your brain, you can’t be forced to be a leader. So show that it’s YOU that will make a difference. Go out and leave your mark on the world. And remember, be a LEADER, not a follower.

Ratchet.
ReplyDeleteEverywhere these days you will here teenagers spewing the word “ratchet” from their mouths. Many curious parents and elders will wonder what on earth is so interesting about this little tool. However, it is not the tool they are speaking of. The meaning of ratchet, like many other words in the English dictionary has strayed from its true definition.
Ratchet went from being a very widely used tool found with in any common tool box, to being the word used to describe a “ghetto, ugly, dirty, or a generally disliked female.” As Urban Dictionary states it, “...has reason to believe she is every man’s eye candy. Unfortunately, she's wrong.” As you can see, the true definition and the way the word ratchet is used today, has greatly changed. It is said that this new definition of ratchet was formed in Louisiana, originally a dance done in night clubs or raves. The name slowly was transferred from the dance, to those doing the dance, who could all be squeezed in to one category, now known as a ratchet.
Its funny to think how a simple word such as ratchet could be transformed in to something even more opposite than its original definition. How is it that the human mind can alter word meanings entirely with very few similarities in the two subjects? I find it quite amusing.
Sincerely,
Kai Chase

ReplyDeleteOptimism
Your head is hung over your shoulders. Staring at the floor, your fingers intertwining, you’re terribly nervous and afraid. The Walls are caving in. Darkness is taking over. Realizing there is no way out, you’re trapped in a bottomless hole falling forever. You know and believe that evils always win. That no matter how good you are or how fair your choices may seem, things will always bring you down.
But that’s not what it is.
Optimism looks like every sunrise and sunset, the beginning of something new and the ending of a memory. It smells like pretty, peppy cheerleaders. Even though the team is loosing, they have the power and will to see and encourage that the team can still succeed. And tastes like an award winning salsa dip, both confident and knows its’ place.
Basically, the knowledge and belief that good ultimately predominate over evil in the world. Everyone should be more optimistic.

DeleteFrustration
ReplyDeleteSomething isn’t working. No matter how hard you try nothing is turning out the way you had hoped. Suddenly a knot forms like a pretzel in your stomach and you have the urge to just squeeze the life out of something. This, my friend, is frustration.
Every living being on the earth gets frustrated. That caterpillar that just can’t get out of his cocoon, birds whose nests just wont stay on that darn tree, me writing this essay, heck even trees that just can grow enough fruit. Frustration is a part of us all. It’s an emotion; a feeling.
Not only is frustration a feeling of annoyance, but it’s an annoyance in its self. No one likes to feel frustrated. I mean really, who wants there stomach to feel like it’s twisted in a pretzel? Plus the fact that something caused you to feel frustrated in the first place meaning something annoyed you. Whether It’s your mom embarrassing you in front of your friends or doing that “thing” you hate, or that bibliography that just doesn’t want to stay glued to your project board.
Many things can classify someone as a frustrated individual. There are those who hold in their frustration and take deep breaths, those who get upset but try to move on, and then there are those, like myself, that get so frustrated they are A) ripping their hair out. B) throwing whatever they were working on across the room. C) getting so frustrated their angry, meaning a lot of yelling and AH’s. or D) all of the above.
Everyone feels frustration. It’s a part of life. Although it may not be a good feeling or emotion, it is a necessary one. Without the feeling of frustration when something is annoying or doesn’t work, we wouldn’t feel the good feeling we do when something works just how we wanted it too, or someone says something clever and exciting to us. We all must put our frustration with frustration aside and embrace that pretzel in out stomachs!

Oppurtunity
ReplyDeleteIt's knocking on your door right at this moment. Taking the moment to swing that door open and let it in.
Oppurtunity is one of the things that helps you grow in life and when you don't take it at that moment you may miss a whole life changing experience that may help you later in life.
Taking all the oppurtunities handed to you will make you a very successful person in my eyes because you get to experience things in a different way than everyone else. Thinking outside of the box will always help you in a sticky situation.
Opputunity is not a thing that will later on hurt you in life. Like for me and my trip that I may be going on called people to people. I get to actually travel and learn about different cultures at the source. I also get to really think abiut how I can make a difference in these peoples' lives and also teach them about my culture as well.

DeletePoverty
ReplyDeletePoverty. For as long as I can remember, I have always seen poverty as living in harsh conditions and barely getting by on a daily basis. However, the definition of poverty can differ, depending on who you ask. To some poverty may be living on welfare with no job and no health insurance. For others it could mean living in a one bedroom apartment while working three jobs with three kids as a single parent.
In America, poverty is thought of as being unemployed with the cost of living going up and making ends meet is more difficult. More people are now having to chose between health care, education or food. The poverty level line for a family of four is at the income of $23,550 and for most families that is barely getting by on a place in the projects. Moreover, poverty is more “hidden” here than in other countries. At schools, it is hard to distinguish which students are living in poverty and which are not. People can still put on a show for their middle class peers because they think it is how they will be accepted. However, when they lay in bed that night, they know there’s still a stack of unpaid bills aside the kitchen counter, feeling crestfallen on the inside
Extreme poverty could be considered as the worst of conditions and is common in third world countries. Extreme poverty is living in a smell that never leaves. And the scent is not of febreeze air freshener or laundry detergent, it’s of urine, sour milk, dirty diapers and clothes that have been on one’s back for over a week. Extreme poverty is having a tremendous amount of fatigue at the end of the day after scavenging for trash, only to come home and sleep on a dirt-stained old matress you found at the dump. Extreme poverty is being permanently ill with a blistered face with feces, oil, dirt and grine in your hands and feet. If your child catches the flu or disease, there is no hoping the doctors can save him, only hope that faith can save them. Extreme poverty is looking and remembering. Seeing the world that you are surrounded by and remembering the gruesome and petrifying memories that got you here in the first place Begging for food as a child and seeing the pity looks on pale faces, watching your sibling get taken away in front of you to later find her in the Red Light District selling her body to get by or witnessing your mother make you go pick up the weekly ration of food from the church while she injects more heroin.
Poverty is a depressing subject to think about but it is also crucial to be aware about it. In this world there will always be poverty and there will always be people suffering. I say that it’s time to go help these people in need. When I hear the word poverty that’s what I think, helping the people who can’t help themselves.

Innocent
ReplyDeleteHer soft lashes flutter around doe eyes sheltered above by a mazework of curiosity etched into the delicate furrow of her brow, an excited wiggly toothed smile spreads across her cheeks where rosy tinted baby pudge lingers. Her petite hands begin to riffle through a wooden chest filled with glittering fabrics, and shimmering treasures. She selects an elegant appearing long strand of faux pearls, and a deep green velor dress spackled in a light dusting of sparkles that was unquestionably owned prior by someone much older. In her haste she plops both in a hampered tangle on the floor. Dainty steps patter off into the distance of her parents room; she tiptoes, embracing the epitome of cunning as she overly exaggerates her lurking about. Clutching to a pair of leather pumps and a wide brimmed sun hat faceted with a dramatic floral bouquet she evacuates back into the refuge of her plushy fortress. Her eyes filled with wonder stare through the sticker plastered pink full length mirror at the reflection of her gawky fitting glimmering mock ‘all grown-up’ self. A version of adulthood as thought of by a child mind filled with gossamer wings and satin ribbons.
Innocent: free from guilt or sin especially through lack of knowledge of evil. To be pure of all fault, wrongdoing, toil with a mind naive to the acceptance of such thought. This is the common definition accepted as being innocent.
The young girl i described before embodies the heart of innocence; she in every way is enjoying herself through the untainted delight of childhood thrills. All the while she is attempting to personify her idea of ‘grown-up’ through her mother’s shoes, hat, the hand-me-down dress, and the pearl strand. She is naive in her thoughts of maturity; her youthful mind cannot comprehend the hardships, and obstacles in place for those in adulthood. Instead her mind sees only the frills attached and how glamorous it all seems. She is innocent to maturity.
Many mistake the act of being innocent for one of ignorance. Yet this misleading; innocence is inability to attain knowledge or the lack thereof to make a stable confident assessment, however, ignorance is the ability to not only attain but understand the knowledge yet the target person blatantly ignores the facts and continues in making inadequate analysis.
Innocent; the strenght one uses to isolate themselves from pressing vulgar situations, all without their own knowledge of what the situation is.

Trust
ReplyDelete“firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something”
Trust is one of the most powerful unseen forces. It can be as solid as steel but as fragile as glass. Once broken it can never be repaired to its original strength. As a teenager we are at times betrayed by our own friends we thought we could trust. The more times they betray our trust, the more and more trust diminishes. Throughout our lives we will come to learn the value of trust and that only a few will truly be trustworthy.
To most teenagers trust can be a touchy subject, almost all teenagers in high school experience a time of betrayal from a friend they thought they could trust. As with almost every high school, words spread like wildfire. So when you tell a friend “did you hear about.. blah blah blah..don't tell anybody okay?” even though you tell that person not to tell anybody, you can almost guarantee that they will. Like a chain reaction, the rumor spreads.
When you lose trust in someone, you feel hurt and betrayed by that person. To think that you can trust a person, then to find out that you can’t, changes a person emotionally and mentally. Like the saying “you built your walls so high, that nobody could get in” The more times we are betrayed by trust, the higher we build our walls, and the harder it is to trust again. Although this keeps the bad experiences away, it equally restricts the good experiences as well.
Trust is not something you can't buy, borrow, or replace. There are definitely levels of trust as well, some we trust with our money, some we trust with our secrets, and some with our health and well being. But to completely trust somebody is something very rare and valuable. To trust somebody to me, is to know that they are there for you whenever you need them. To know you can tell them anything, to know that you are safe with them, that is trust. For me, I only completely trust a few, for now, I find trust in my family.

Consciousness
ReplyDeleteIn one moment you may be focused on reading this, the next moment you may shift to the memory of something that happened today. Our experience of conscious is always changing as our thoughts and environment shifts. The first basic definition of consciousness is awareness. But with this simple definition of consciousness all living things could be considered conscious. Animals are aware of predators. Plants are aware of gravity and the position of the sun. A better definition perhaps would be Consciousness is an awareness of what we’re thinking and what we’re doing. It provides context or meaning for our actions. Consciousness is what makes us different from other living things. Consciousness is not something we can see but we know it exist in us. If that part of you does not exist then we are basically functioning like an insect where you just respond instinctively without a thought to what your actions mean.

ReplyDeleteDetermination is a strong will that kindles fire in the hearts of the passionate. The unforgiving perseverance to accomplish set aspirations and it is the power that enables man to move mountains. Determination moves through each motivated individuals. Determination is not for the weak, lazy, or cowards. To have this quality, one must overcome their fears and dive underneath to conquer and break out of their comfort zones. A determined person is a daredevil, fearless of what’s ahead and views the horizon as a positive inspiration. Determination presents itself to every newborn. The willingness of a child, struggling to seek a place in the world is that of a miraculous work of this trait.
Determination is not only present within human beings. It is ubiquitous and inevitable. It is what moves mother nature to change the leaves of the trees , it’s what pushes caterpillars out of their cocoons, and drives salmons up the stream. Determination flows effortlessly within anything it touches. As life presents the world with hindrance, the world then clothes itself with iron determination, prepared to hurdle over obstructions that we continue to emit.
This character is not a just mere word that’s uttered. It is intangible yet touches the heart of many. When you feel like giving up, just remember that determination is on your side and is only an inhale and exhale away.

DeleteSmart
ReplyDeleteBook smart, street smart, technology smart, people smart, and life smart. How many different “smarts” can there be? My definition of smart is simply someone who knows a lot of information about a certain thing. Everyone is smart in their own way, just some differ from others. Being smart is NOT just limited to “oh, that person gets straight A’s, they must be really smart.” Well “that person” may not be comfortable with drawing, but you may be a wonderful artist.
For teenagers “smart” may be a tricky subject. With all of social media, and peer pressure influences telling them that only brainacs can go to this college, or that you are dumb. It can clearly affect the teenage mind, making them think they will result to nothing. If you go into google, and type in the word smart into the search bar, the first thing that appears is “TEST YOU IQ”. So like I stated before, the world likes to limit “smart” to just being book smart. When in reality, that word means so much more.

DeletePeace of Mind.
ReplyDeleteNow bear with me as I discuss my Hippy topic.
Peace of Mind has many abstract meanings. There is not one meaning or saying that can sum up the definition. Sometimes it can mean different things to other people and therefore is used in different ways. When I say “Peace of Mind” I am not talking about a physical piece of the brain but rather an emotional state. A greedy person, will most likely never acquire Peace of mind because his mind is set on physical objects. People such as businessmen or politicians are rarely mindful people because there life is based around money and possession.
Over time the Peace of Mind has been practiced by many different religious and social groups. The monks are the biggest group of people whose existence was based around this knowledge. Even a religious icon, Buddha, was a symbol of someone who had Peace of Mind.
The monks believed that being in Peace of Mind was the beginning of true growth and development. “Resolutely train yourself to attain peace” ~ Buddha. Because there is no dictionary definition of Peace of Mind, prophets like Buddha made quotes about what it means. The only effect that people go after by trying to live their life threw this idea is happiness, or contentment.
To some people, being at peace is when they have everything that they could possibly need or want and threw that they find peace. But the true meaning of Peace of mind cannot be found in a physical object but rather inside your self. It’s a mental thing. When you are content with your life the exact way that it is in this moment, then you find peace.
The only thing that I wish for you or I is that we find our own meaning of peace, even if we have to get a little hippy-like while doing so☺
